Theme Days
To increase student motivation and encourage a positive reading culture within the school, there will be “Theme days” in which
students can show support for reading and school pride. *RELAY TO STUDENT NO HAIR DYE OR DISRUPTIVE PROPS AND COSTUMES
MAY BE WORN. ALL OUTFITS MUST FOLLOW THE SCHOOL DRESS CODE.
The schedule is as follows:
 Monday: Reading Rocks, Wear Funky Socks (Students wear silly socks)
 Tuesday: Hunt down a good book (Students wear camo)
 Wednesday: (Fiction Day)Twin Day (Students and teachers dress up as favorite story book characters)
 Thursday: (Nonfiction Day) Students dress up as a STEM related worker (science, math, engineering,
technology, etc.)
 Friday: SHINE for Reading (Students wear WES pride shirts)
Reading Fair
Each class will submit a reading fair poster that focuses on a fiction or nonfiction book. The class will read the book together and
create a display that highlights story elements or text structure. The poster display will be created with the help of students. All
posters will be displayed in the cafeteria.
Mystery Readers
Students will read a poem on the morning announcements each day for Literacy Week. One student from each grade level will be
chosen to participate (K-5).
Million Minute Marathon
All students will participate in the Million Minute Marathon. Students will be given an additional 30 minutes each day to read.
These minutes will be recorded, sent to Patsy, and at the end of the week, will be submitted to “Just Read Florida!” (This can be
done in content areas, as well as in the ELA block) Please check the district site to find videos of Mr. Shirley and others reading to the
students.

Bookmark Contest
Students in grade K-5 will be able to participate in the bookmark contest. Students will create a bookmark that promotes reading, or
is centered around their favorite book. Students will receive a blank bookmark and the rules on Monday and will need to submit the
bookmark on Wednesday. A winner from each grade level will be announced on Friday.
Daily Media Center Giveaway
Each day during the week, the media center will be giving away prizes. Mrs. Strickland or Ms. Daniels will announce one winner
from pre-k, three winners from K-2 and three winners from 3-5. Tickets will be distributed to each homeroom teacher so that all
students have an opportunity to put their name in the drawings. Each student will be allowed one entry.
Daily Morning Announcements
Each day for Literacy Week, Mrs. Strickland or Ms. Daniels will be highlighting special books to pique interest.
Books and Brownies
Friday, teachers may invite parents to come in and read A.R. with their child. Brownies and/or cookies may be provided for
refreshments during this time. This activity is optional for teachers.
Book-a-thon
Students will be sent home a pledge form to raise money for each AR book they test on and pass. The money collected will go to fund classroom
libraries. Teachers are able to pick the day they wish to do the book-a-thon on, and may invite parents to come in as reading helpers for this event.
Poem in My Pocket
Students can write a poem, to be reviewed by the teacher, and carry it in their pocket. Adults can randomly stop kids and ask to hear their poem.
Optional for all classes.

Reading Fair
Each class will submit a reading fair board that focuses on a fiction or nonfiction book. The class will read the book together and
create a display that highlights story elements or text structure. The board display will be create with the help of students and
submitted for judging. A first place winner will be chosen within each grade level and will receive a prize.
Mystery Readers
Student council members will visit classrooms and read their favorite story to the class. The mystery reader will read the book
wearing a mask. This will be an ongoing event (Monday-Friday) on a sign up basis.
Reading Olympics/Million Minute Marathon
All students will participate in the Reading Olympics. Students will be given an additional 30 minutes each day to read. These
minutes will be recorded and at the end of the week, will be submitted to “Just Read Florida!” On Friday, students will be given an
all-day Read-a-Thon.
Leaders are Readers
School administrators will pre-record readings of their favorite book and it will be available for students to watch during literacy
week.
Daily Media Center Giveaway
Each day during the week, the media center will be giving away prizes. A timer will be set for 45 minute intervals. Every 45 minutes
when the timer goes off, the student checking a book out at that time will receive a prize (pencil, bookmark, book, etc.).
Daily Morning Announcements
The reading coach will announce the daily activities for literacy week. Some days, the reading coach will read a quote from a
favorite book or give a fact about reading. Each day, a student will give a mini book commercial over the announcements,
promoting their favorite book.
Starbooks Café
Thursday afternoon, the AR points for each class will be tallied The top class with the most points within each grade level will
receive a pancake breakfast on Friday morning. An administrator or resource teacher will come in and cook a pancake breakfast for
the class while they read AR.
Literacy Night (Thursday before literacy Week)
Students and parents in grades K-5 will be invited to attend Literacy Night. During this evening event, there will be a story teller and
AR time available for students to read with their parents.

Chalk the Walk
o Each class will draw a book cover, characters from a story, and/or scenes from a
favorite book on the area outside of their classroom. Chalk will be placed in your
box to use for this event.
Literacy Night
o Performer -TBD. After the presentation, students will disburse to designated
classrooms to participate in reading activities and games. Door prizes & books
will be awarded at the end of the evening. The event will take place 5:30-7:00
Book Character Dress Up
o Students, teachers, and staff are encouraged to dress as their favorite book
character. Costumes must be school appropriate.
