High School Essay Competition on Nanotechnology

The Nanotechnology Laboratory in the College of Engineering at the University of Toledo is
sponsoring an essay competition in Nanotechnology for Northwest Ohio high school students.
The purpose of this outreach program is to motivate students to read about nanotechnology, discuss
the topic with teachers/friends/guardians, and develop a basic understanding of nanotechnology
concepts. We strongly believe this will influence high school students’ thinking in the basic sciences
and develop their understanding of the connections between the basic sciences and nanotechnology.
It will also motivate students become independent thinkers and learners.
Eligibility
High School Junior/Senior
Number of Applicants per school: Three (3)
Submission deadline:
Essays must be postmarked no later than March 20 each year
Awards:
1st place - $200.00,
2nd place - $100.00,
3rd place - $50.00
Certificates will be issued to individuals who write the best 10 essays.
Winners will be invited to the College of Engineering at The University of Toledo, during the 3rd
week of May for the presentation of prizes and certificates. A tour of the Nanotechnology Lab will
also be given.

Format:
Margin-1 inch, single-space, font-12 point Times New Roman. Pictures can be
embedded in the essays, titles should be shown bold, sub titles should be underlined, and space
between paragraphs is optional. The first sentence of each paragraph should be indented.
