Biographical Sketch for Donald J. Klingborg, DVM Associate Dean, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Don Klingborg is an Associate Dean in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. His responsibilities include overseeing Veterinary Medicine Extension and its faculty at Davis and the Tulare field station as well as Public Programs, which involves legislative relations; continuing professional education; and interfacing with national, state, and local veterinary organizations. Dr. Klingborg serves as director of the Center for Continuing Professional Education and until recently was on the Steering Committee for the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense. He is course leader or co-leader for six courses (about 14 units) and a frequent guest lecturer in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Masters of Preventive Veterinary Medicine curricula. Dr. Klingborg received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from UC Davis in 1972. He spent a year in advanced clinical studies in large animal medicine and surgery at Colorado State University and was in private clinical practice in Merced, California from 1973 to 1993. At the time of his departure Dr. Klingborg served as President of the Atwater-Merced Veterinary Clinics, Inc., providing care for dairy, beef, small ruminant, horse and companion animals from three different facilities in Merced County. Dr. Klingborg is an internationally recognized dairy veterinarian and has consulted or made presentations on topics relating to dairy herd health and performance throughout the United States and on every continent except Antarctica. He was honored by his peer group, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, as the Bovine Practitioner of the Year; by his school with their highest honor, the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Alumni Achievement Award; and by his community with Agribusiness Man of the Year honors from both the City of Atwater and the City & County of Merced. Dr. Klingborg was the first veterinarian to receive a fellowship in the California Ag Leadership program (Class XVIII). He credits his experiences there with catalyzing his move from private clinical practice to the larger arena at the University of California and national veterinary organizations. A family of “persistent learners,” Don, his wife, and their sons have accumulated between them thirty-two years of higher education spread across eight colleges and universities, including Cal Poly SLO, Sacramento State, UC Davis, Colorado State University, Merced College, CSU Fresno, National Taiwan University and Harvard. Bev, his wife of 43 years, is a teacher of the deaf and hard-of-hearing and an author of workbooks for teachers of children with language delays. Son Jon is a veterinarian in private clinical practice and past president of the California Veterinary Medical Association. Jon and his family live in Atwater, California. Son Brian is into publishing educational books and is also a published author and screenwriter as well as a ranked amateur martial arts competitor. Brian lives with his family in New York City. Grandsons Patrick and Aaron live in California and grand-daughters Sophie and Sylvie live in New York.
