It is designed for students who are reading at grade level or above and planning to pursue some form of post-high school education. Emphasis will be placed on sentence structure, paragraph development, and effective and correct use of words. A variety of literary types will be explored: short stories, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and the novel. Literary terms and techniques will be introduced for each type of literature studied. Summer reading is required. English 9 Honors 1002 03 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 9 1 Year 2 Credits Prerequisite: Approved application required. Grade of A or B in previous English CP or Honors/ teacher recommendation. Language Arts Lab 1010 10 Grade 9 1 year 2 credits Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation Language Arts Lab is a course designed for ninth-grade students who have not yet developed proficiency in the application of the language arts content standards (essential skills). Students gain reading and writing skills. Small-group instruction dominates the teaching strategies used in a student-centered classroom that focuses on reading and writing in both content and general areas. This course does not meet the English credit requirements for graduation. English 10 1004 01 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 10 1 Year 2 Credits Prerequisite: Credit in a least 1 semester of English 9/teacher recommendation. This is a course in which students will read grade appropriate literature and focus on the further development of writing, language, vocabulary, and listening skills. This study of language, literature, composition, and oral communication is designed for the accelerated student who is academically advanced and highly self-motivated. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary and preparation for the SAT/ACT. Exit project, research projects, and Summer Reading are required. English 11 1006 01 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 11 1 Year 2 Credits Prerequisite: English 10/teacher recommendation. With a balance of reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, literature, and media studies, English 11 students further develop their use of language as a tool for learning and thinking. Students move from predominantly analyzing and using the elements of written language to making judgments based on those analyses. Students learn how to respond critically, reflectively, and imaginatively to grade appropriate literature and expository texts, including essays, short stories, poetry, novels, and dramatic works. Course also emphasizes reading for pleasure and exposes students to reading materials available in public libraries. English 11 CP (College Prep) 1006 02 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 11 1 Year 2 Credits Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in English 10/ teacher recommendation. This integrated study of language, literature, composition, and oral communication emphasizes technical and academic writing, including literary analysis, informative and narrative essays, and research assignments. Summer reading is required. English 11 Honors English Lit/Composition 1006 03 1058 04 Advanced Placement Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 11 1 year 2 credits Prerequisite: Approved application required. Grade of A or B in previous English CP or Honors/ teacher recommendation. This exacting course engages students in careful reading and critical analysis of a wide range and depth of literature. Emphasis is placed on literary artistry and the relationship between literature and social and historical values. Students will write critical, analytical, and argumentative essays and have times writing assignments. Research projects and summer reading are required along with the AP exam. English 12 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 12 1 Year 2 Credits 1008 01 Prerequisite: English 11/teacher recommendation Grade 12 continues to refine students’ ability and desire to learn and communicate about language and literature. Students practice explaining and defending their readings to others. The emphasis on different cultural contexts is intensified in a focus on grade-appropriate literature. Students learn to identify and communicate about the broad themes, trends, and cultural issues present in literature by applying reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. English 12 CP (College Prep) 1008 02 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 12 1 Year 2 Credits Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in English 11 /teacher recommendation This integrated study of language, literature, composition, and oral communication emphasizes technical and academic writing, including literary analysis, and informative and persuasive essays. Course focuses on a wide variety of written texts, including classic and contemporary literature, reference materials, technical resources, and online information. Research paper and Summer reading are required. English 12 Honors 1008 03 English Language and Composition, Advanced Placement Advanced English Language Arts College Credit Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 12 1 Year 2 Credits 1056 04 Prerequisite: Approved application required. Grade of A or B in previous English CP or Honors/ teacher recommendation. This academically rigorous course provides an extensive study of the English language and academic composition. Students read prose from a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts; they write in a variety of modes, including expository and persuasive. Students will learn rhetorical analysis of literary and prose texts. College level work is required for this class. The course follows College Board Entrance Examination guidelines for Advanced Placement English. Requirements: Research paper, summer reading, and AP exam. Speech 1076 21 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 9 - 12 1 Year 2 Credits Prerequisite: none Speech provides the study of and practice in the basic principles and techniques of effective oral communication. Students will be required to outline, organize, and deliver various types of presentations. Some research is required. Participation in speech will help students increase self-awareness, enhance listening skills, and help build confidence in oral communication. Student Publications I 1086 30 Student Publications II 1086 40 Grade 10-12 1 Semester 1 Credit Prerequisite: Application Required May be taken for successive semesters. This course provides the study of and practice in gathering and analyzing information, interviewing, and note taking for the purpose of: (1) writing, (2) editing, and (3) publishing for print, including student publications. This course includes instruction and practice in effective journalistic writing forms and techniques as well as layout, design, and typography. Word processing and desktop publishing technology is used to support the curriculum. This course helps student develop an awareness of audience and purpose in evaluating and producing written media. Students must apply with instructor in January. Creative Writing 1092 01 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 9-12 1 year 2 credits Prerequisite: “C” or above in English Creative Writing will cover a variety of writing activities including poetry, drama, advertising, and short story writing among other genres. In addition, students in Creative Writing will participate in Destination Imagination, an academic problem-solving project designed to help students learn writing, thinking and presentation skills while working in small groups. Participation in this project will require that students attend competitions and participate in fund raising events. Composition 1090 01 Core 40/AHD/THD Grade 9 – 12 1 Semester 1 Credit Prerequisite: “C” or above in English Composition will cover a variety of prose writing activities including an autobiography, short story, fairy tale or feature story, and essay. Students will learn to use the writing process to improve the writing. Portfolio of completed work will be required at end of each project. Theater Arts I 4242 11 Core 40/AHD/THD/DE Grades 9-12 1 Semester 1Credit Prerequisite: None Students enrolled in Theater Arts I will increase their knowledge of theater and develop specific skills related to acting. Students will create, practice, and perform scripts and skits, including improvisations, skits, and mimes. Students will read and analyze plays and will view and analyze theatrical performances. Students will research the use of masks in theater and will create their own masks. Students will engage in reading, writing, speaking, and acting. There will be both written and performance evaluations. Students must be willing to participate in class and perform in front of a group. Theater Arts II 4242 21 Core 40/AHD/THD/DE Grades 9-12 1 Semester 1 Credit Prerequisite: None Students enrolled in Theater Arts II will increase and refine their knowledge of theater and develop specific skills related to acting. Students will create, practice, and perform scripts and skits, including plays and monologues. Students will read and analyze plays and will view and analyze theatrical performances. Students will learn and practice techniques for creating theatrical makeup. Students will study and research the history of theater. Students will engage in reading, writing, speaking, and acting. There will be both written and performance evaluations. Students must be willing to participate in class and perform in front of a group. English as a New Language 1012 01 Grades 9-12 1 Year 2 Credits Core 40 Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation English as a New Language provides Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students with instruction in English that would improve their proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is placed on helping students to function within the regular school setting and within an English-speaking society. May be taken for successive semesters, 8 credit maximum, with a maximum of 4 credits counted as part of the 8 required English/Language Arts credits. SAT/Test Prep 9010 00 Grade 10-12 1 semester 1 credit Prerequisite: “C” or above in English SAT/Test Prep is a one-semester class aimed at helping students improve their scores on standardized tests, such as the SAT and PSAT. In this class, students will familiarize themselves with the test formats of standardized tests and the types of questions typically found on such tests. Students will practice test-taking skills and learn strategies for answering specific types of questions. In addition, students will learn to construct well organized, focused essays on a variety of topics. Vocabulary review and reading skills will also be stressed. This class is intended for college prep students who will be taking the PSAT and SAT; it is not focused on ISTEP but could be helpful in learning useful test-taking strategies. Technical Communication 1096 01 Core 40/AHD 1 Semester 1 Credit Prerequisite: None This course presents an overview of computers in English education including productivity tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and graphics. Through discussions, readings, and class activities students will examine the impact of technology on society, on their own education, and on their role in the business world. Writing and presentation software will be used for communication; and multimedia and web-tools will be used to design engaging learning environments. Participants will use databases and spreadsheets in support of inquiry learning. Technical writing in accordance with Indiana Academic Standards for English will be the primary goal of the course. Technical writing provides instruction and practice in the processes and conventions of effective technical writing-communication. The course uses all general steps of the writing process to produce technical reports of varying lengths and complexities. The final draft of these reports should follow accepted conventions of language, style, mechanics, and format. Students develop technical reading skills through the use of professional journals and trade publications. Students will also present oral presentations on different topics based on individual occupational interest. It is recommended that word processors be used to support the writing instruction in this course.
