Mrs. Chas U. Link sends us the following obituary taken from her home paper. “Charles Ulysses Link, son of Jacob and Elizabeth Link, was born near Wakarusa, Elkhart County, Indiana, January 19, 1869 and passed away at his home in Mt. Vernon, South Dakota, Dec. 20, 1938 at the aged 69 years, 11 months and 1 day. Charles was the youngest of a family of nine children and has been the only living member of the family for 10 years. He lived with her parents on his father’s farm at Wakarusa until he was married. On January 18, 1891, he was married to Miss Clara Berkey, and to this union was born six children, 3 sons and 3 daughters, all survive their father in death except one girl, Mabel, who died at the age six months. Mr. Link stayed on the home place until it was sold, then continued his residence in Indiana until the year 1900, when he and is family to South Dakota locating in Davison county, settling on a farm two miles east of Mt. Vernon, South Dakota, where he was living at the time of his death. Mr. Link was always enjoyed good health until about two years ago when he was injured while handling a team on a wagon. The injury at the time did not seem so serious, but has troubled him more or less ever since December 3rd about 11:30 P. M. he suffered a stroke of Paralysis. For some few days he seemed to improve and the family hoped that he was on his way to recovery but on Thursday, December 15th about 2 A. M. he suffered another severe attack which left him in an unconscious state from which he never recovered. For five and one-half days he lay in a coma, and on Tuesday, December 20th about 1:30 P. M., he quietly breathed his last and made his departure. As to his religious life and background, Mr. Link was raised and brought up in the Mennonite faith. After his marriage and the coming of the family, Mr. and Mrs. Link united in the fellowship of the Methodist Episcopal church in Obar, New Mexico, later transferring their membership to the Methodist church in Mt. Vernon. Mr. Link was a farmer by occupation, but he dearly loved and relished all kinds of music, and especially singing. He was Chorister and Superintendent of the Sunday School of the Mennonite church to which he belonged for a number of years, and also led and directed the choir in the Methodist church of Mt. Vernon for several years, and helped in the singing in programs and at numerous funerals and wherever his help was needed. Throughout his best years of life he organized and led a number of singing schools, which he greatly enjoyed and was much appreciated by those who attended. Mr. Link was a good citizen, friend and neighbor. A loving husband and father. His passing will leave an empty place in our midst, but his memory we shall forever cherish. He leaves to mourn his departure his widow and companion of nearly 48 years, Mrs. Clara Link of Mt. Vernon, three sons and two daughters; Forrest E. Link of Pratt, Kan., Mrs. Edna Jones and Oscar R. Link of Mt. Vernon, South Dakota; Eldon Link of Western Springs, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Coursey of Aberdeen, South Dakota; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild besides other relatives and friends. 1-5-1939
