USE OF BILINGUAL DICTIONARIES IN
UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS
Please note that students whose first language is not English who intend
to use a bilingual translation dictionary in their examinations under the
terms of the University’s regulations must observe the following
restrictions regarding the use of such dictionaries:
(1) French Studies (all examinations with code prefix FR, except for
FR1090 Aspects of French and German Literature in Translation):
dictionaries may not be used where French is one of the dictionary’s
languages.
(2) Italian (all examinations with code prefix IT): dictionaries may not be
used where Italian is one of the dictionary’s languages.
(3) German Studies (all examinations with code prefix GE, except for
GE2080 Naturalism and GE3000 Culture, the Text and Identity):
dictionaries may not be used where German is one of the dictionary’s
languages.
(4) Language Centre examinations (all examinations with code prefix
LL): no dictionary may be used unless expressly permitted by the rubric
of the individual examination paper.
Where dictionary use is allowable, only one bilingual dictionary (English
– the foreign language; the foreign language – English) is permitted.
Other types of dictionary are not permitted.
Candidates are responsible for providing their own dictionaries and
these must be approved for examination use by a candidate’s home
department before the examinations.
Failure to abide by the above restrictions will be regarded as cheating
and may make candidates liable to proceedings under the University’s
Regulations Governing Suspected Cheating in a University Test.
