Stonehenge The history of Stonehenge can be divided into three main periods, covering a span of about nine centuries, between 2200 and 1300 BC. Period 1 The earliest structures were the bank and ditch, the Heel Stone and the Aubrey Holes, all of which appear to belong to the late Neolithic period, around 2000 BC. Period 2 About 200 years later, at least 80 bluestones weighing up to 4 tons apiece were brought from the Prescelly mountains in Pembrokeshire and from the shores of Milford Haven. Period 3 Not long after 1600 BC the bluestones were dismantled and put on one side. In their place over 80 enormous blocks of sarsen stone which we see today were dragged from the Marlborough Downs. Finally the bluestones were reset.
