The Revised Farney Family Tree
Introduction
We are indebted to those souls who have the good sense to document their family history.
Charles Edward Farney may have wondered what he had gotten himself into when he sat down
to perform that assignment in 1941, for with the Farneys, that was no small task. Many of the
descendants of John Farney had ten or more children.
The primary purpose for updating C. E. Farney’s 1941 publication was to spurn interest in others
to investigate Farney history, and add any information they could on their immediate family
members. In updating the publication, much of Charles’ text was left, with tenses changed,
corrections incorporated and some editing done to improve readability. The 1954 update was
also incorporated into the main body of the text and is noted as such. I have added any
additional information I could obtain, and that information is annotated as the 1995 update.
Unfortunately, many of the individuals have not been updated, and not all descendants have
been identified.
This book contains mention of over 300 descendants of John Farney, in
addition to those who married into the family. It is estimated that there are many hundreds more.
The most significant change is the addition of the information on John Farney’s second family,
provided by Anita Silvey. I am indebted to her, as well as Moscelene, Kathy and Ivan Farney for
providing their information. Thanks goes to other family members, and Mary Powell, a member
of the other side of my family, whose avid interest in genealogy has spurred insight into Farney
family origin. Last, but not least, I thank my husband Greg Hampton, who proofread this
somewhat tedious document.
Anita Silvey also did much research into the early Farney generations. The reader will note
some contradictions between C. E. Farney’s work and Silvey’s. It is assumed that Farney
developed much information from memory and family lore, while Silvey, an experience
genealogist, provided background documentation (court records, censuses, histories, etc.). One
of the prime examples of this is the question of whether the John Farney mentioned actually
lived to be 109, or if his birthdate was confused with that of his father, also named John Farney.
Another case of family lore is cited when Farney states that John Farney married a German
woman. Silvey pointed out, in reviewing his data, that there is no proof that John’s second wife,
Elizabeth Martin, was German.
This edition lacks many of the anecdotes that make the Farneys such an interesting bunch. It is
to be hoped that those stories can be included in future revisions. One such story was provided
by my uncle, Ivan Farney, whose uncle was Charles Edward Farney. He relayed that “Uncle
Charlie” used to stand at the pulpit giving intense sermons, “pointing his long bony finger at my
mother and him” when they were children. Ivan says because of that memory, he often avoids
going to church. This ability to instill guilt is evident in Charlie’s addendum. After a long
expression of thanks to those who cooperated with him in compiling the original document, he
adds, “If I could have had the full cooperation of all, the Tree would have been more satisfactory
and more valuable.” It appears as though Uncle Charlie was another of those colorful Farney
characters.
I will not elaborate further on Farney stories, but allow the reader to get to the meat of this
document. You will find that in many instances, the document raises more questions than it
answers. If you, the reader, can add any insight into Farney origin, provide updated information,
or correct errors, please contact the editor.

The Descendants of John and Mary Radcliffe Farney
There is a substantial amount of documentation proving that there was a John Farney. Whether
the John mentioned as Gen. 1 (Generation 1) is the American progenitor is doubtful. Family lore
has muddled some of the facts; as will be seen later in the research provided by Anita Silvey.
Silvey is a descendant of John’s through his second wife (family descriptions beginning on page
36).
The following information on John Farney was written by Charles Edward Farney (1941):
Gen. 1.
John Farney. I begin the history of our Farney Family Tree with my greatgrandfather, because that is as far back as I can go. He was born in northern Ireland, near the
year 1750, as nearly as I can make out. He was brought by his parents to the United States
when he was one year old. The family settled in Kentucky and were friends and neighbors of
Daniel Boone. When a young man, he moved to Jackson County, Ohio, and took a government
claim, three miles from Jackson, his first marriage was to Mary Radcliffe. His second marriage
was to a German woman. He was the father of three children by his first wife; William, Rebecca
and David. When he retired from the farm he moved into Jackson. It was his custom to walk out
to his daughter’s home in the country for his birthday dinner. On his one hundred and ninth
birthday, he took his cane and walked out to Becca’s for dinner, four miles from town. When he
reached the Stephenson home he was met in the yard by his daughter and grandchildren, and
seated in a rustic chair called “Grandpa’s chair,” under a large elm tree. He was given a drink of
water and was told to rest, that dinner would soon be ready and that they would call him. He fell
asleep, and when called failed to answer, and when they laid a hand on his shoulder, he was
found to be taking his last long sleep. At his request, made while living, his body was buried on
the top of the highest hill on his homestead. His grave was marked by a large native stone.
1995 update: According to Anita Silvey (Silvey, personnal communication, May 30, 1995), John
Farney’s second wife was Elizabeth Martin, whom he married on December 26, 1815, in Ross
County. The following is primarily Silvey’s research:
John claimed in the 1850 Census that he was born in Virginia; Samuel, his son, claimed in the
1880 Census that John was born in Kentucky. Both records may be true, for in the time that
John was born, Kentucky was part of Virginia. In 1792, Kentucky separated from Virginia to
become the 15th state (Quillen, 1993).
In 1800 in Bourbon County, Kentucky, two John Farneys are listed (Clift, 1982). It is
hypothesized that one of the Farneys was the other’s father. Only one of these Farneys was
listed in Bourbon County by 1797 (Bourbon County.., 1992). Silvey lists John’s birthdate as
1778 in Virginia, and his date of death as 1864 in Ohio (Silvey, personal communication, May
30,1995), making him a more conceivable 86, rather than 109, at his death.
D. Mackley, editor of the Jackson Standard, interviewed John Farney around 1859 for a series
of articles about the Jackson County pioneers. Mackley claimed that John Farney had moved to
Jackson County in the 1700s and that John worked at the salt furnaces (More articles on
Jackson County, 1876). Whatever the exact year of John’s arrival, he was one of the pioneers
who settled southern Ohio. With John Rooke he purchased eighty acres of land from the
Chillicothe land office on March 25, 1814 (United States Department of the Interior, personal
communication, June 21, 1991).
3
The Revised Farney Family Tree
John was drafted to serve in the War of 1812. From around mid-June of 1813 through the end
of August of that year, he was part of Captain William Munn’s company under Colonel Jacob
Noel. For John’s service, he was granted 40 acres of land in 1851, and another 120 acres in
1855 (Bounty Land File).
Williams (1900) mentions that the largest bear ever killed in Jackson County was one that gave
John Farney a fright in 1813. The bear took Farney by surprise, and he ended up fighting with a
hunting knife. “He... lived to be Commissioner of Jackson County. But he never sought another
bear fight.”
In the first election in Jackson County, in which sixty-one votes were cast, John served as one of
the three judges. In 1825 - 26 and 1834, he was one of the Commissioners (Articles on
Jackson, 1886, 1892). He also served on juries and laid out schools in the county (Hixon,
Annals, n.d.).
Concerning the C.E. Farney story of John walking to Becca’s country home on his final day, the
exact scenario seems to have been altered through the generations. Silvey notes that there is
no record that John moved to Jackson, but Becca lived there from 1845 on. She states that if
these walks took place, they were from John’s country home to Becca’s city home. If John did
eventually move to Jackson, it is doubtful that he walked four miles across town, for it’s dubious
that Jackson ever encompassed an area that large.
Gen. 1.
Mary Radcliffe, first wife of John Farney, was born around 1780 in Kentucky (Silvey,
personal communication, May 30, 1995). She died before 1815. They had at least four children
(1995 update).
Gen. 2.
William Farney, son of John and Mary Radcliffe Farney, was most probably born on
Cabin Creek in Kentucky. He married and reared a fine family, and outstanding member of
which was his son, Ira. The family moved from Kentucky and located on a farm about nine miles
from Portsmouth, Ohio.
In October of 1824, William was paid $1.50 by Jackson County, Ohio, for the scalp of a wild wolf
under the age of six (1995 update; Hixon, Annals).
Gen. 2.
Rebecca Farney, daughter of John and Mary Radcliffe Farney, married John
Stephenson, a member of one of the old and influential families of Jackson County. Their
children have all passed to the great beyond, but a number of their grandchildren and greatgrandchildren are living in Jackson and nearby cities.
1995 update: According to Silvey (personal communication, May 30, 1995), Rebecca was born
January 5, 1804, in Ross County, Ohio, and died July 16, 1882, in Jackson County, Ohio. She is
interred in James Cemetery, Lick Township, Jackson County (Jackson Cemeteries, 1982).
Rebecca had sued John for Bastardy on June 28, 1820, and won the case. He was to pay her
$25.00 per year for five years in child support (Clerk of Courts, 1816 - 1822). After they
married, they had nine more children.
In the 1870 Census, Rebecca, then a wealthy widow, was living in the village of Jackson and
was a homemaker. Her property was valued at $7000.
Rebecca’s obituary stated that the Stephensons lived in Bloomfield Township until 1845; at that
point they moved to Jackson. Eight of the ten children preceded her in death. For many years a
Baptist, she became a member of the M. E. church, and the obituary praised her Christian
4
The Revised Farney Family Tree
virtues. For fifty years she had been “severely afflicted” and had been “shut in from the view of
the world by her afflictions” (Obituary, 1882). Rebecca listed her son Stephen and daughter,
Sidney Downey in her will (Stephenson, 1882).
Gen. 2.
John Stephenson, husband of Rebecca Farney, was the son of John and Nancy
Agnes Ewing Stephenson (Obituary of Rebecca, 1882). John served several terms as Auditor of
Jackson County. His father and John Farney frequently served in local government together
(Silvey, personal communication, May 30, 1995).
Gen. 2.
David Radcliffe Farney, son of John and Mary Radcliffe Farney, was born February
2, 1805, in Ross County, Ohio. He married Melinda Duncan and established a home at
Grayson, Carter County, Kentucky. They had eight children. His second family is mentioned
later in the book (1995 update).
According to Silvey (personal communication, May 30, 1995), David was living in Greenup
County, Kentucky, and bought some land in Jackson County. He speculated in land with some
success, in April of 1842, while living in Scioto County, he sold parcels of land in Jackson County
for $120.00 and $475.00 (1995 update; Land deeds, 1842). In the 1840s, William Stephenson
won a settlement against David for $28.75 (1995 update ; Court Notices).
Gen. 2.
Melinda Duncan was David Radcliffe Farney’s first wife. The time and place of
marriage is unknown. She and her children moved from Grayson, Carter County, Kentucky, to
Jackson County, Ohio, while her younger children were quite small. There she married Wyatt
Hammonds on December 25, 1854 (Hixon, Marriages, n.d., p. 30). Apparently, they had a son,
Andrew Hammonds, born in 1856, because he was listed in the 1860 Census, Jackson County,
as living with Melinda (1995 update). After her children were grown and a number of them
married, she and some of them moved to Macon County, Illinois. It is assumed that Wyatt had
died by this time, for he is not shown in the 1860 census. According to Farney, she then married
Isaac Helm, and after his death, a Mr. Talbot, of Niantic, Illinois. Her remains rest in a cemetery
fifteen miles west of Decatur, Illinois (1995 update).
Gen. 2.
Mary Farney, daughter of John and Mary Radcliffe Farney, was born in 1809 in Ross
County, Ohio. She married James Delay on March 31, 1825, in Jackson, Ohio (Smith, 1980).
According to the 1850 Census, they had five children: Elizabeth, Caroline, David, Stephen and
James W. Mary died after 1850 (1995 update).
Gen. 2.
James Delay, husband of Mary Farney, was a neighbor of John Farney (according to
the 1823 tax list). He worked as a mail carrier, and the family lived in Lick Township, Ohio. It is
not known what happened to the family after 1850, for they were not listed in the 1860 Census
as living in Lick Township.
The Descendants of David Radcliffe and Melinda Duncan Farney
The following section contains descriptions of those descendants of David and Melinda Farney
(described above). C. E. Farney was unable to give the order of the births of the David and
Melinda Farney children, especially of the daughters. He stated, “I am using my best judgment
and a guess” (Farney, 1941).
Gen. 3.
Minerva Farney, daughter of David and Melinda Farney, was born at Grayson,
Kentucky. She married Robert (Bob) Alexander. They lived on a farm near Portsmouth, Ohio.
From there they moved to some of the western states and all trace of them has been lost.

Conclusion
As stated in the introduction, this document often raises more questions than it answers. What
happened to the other John Farney, possibly born in 1750, and the father of the John “Bear”
Farney? Who was John “Bear” Farney’s mother? If there was another John Farney born in
Northern Ireland, what happened to the parents who brought him over to America? From where
in Northern Ireland did they originate? While there was a barony of Farney listed in County
Monaghan, there is no obvious trail to Farneys in Ireland. A review of other researcher’s findings
shows that their Farneys originated in Scotland and England. It is our challenge to answer some
of these questions.
It is to be hoped that this document also answers some questions, or at least confirms family
lore. I remember making a mental association as I read that my grandfather’s great-nephew,
Leslie Lee Pennick, accidentally drowned in the Arkansas River in 1916.
My mother had
informed me that she had never learned to swim because her father was terrified of water. She
relayed that he mourned the fact that his cousin had drowned in front of many people who did
not attempt to save him.
Probably because of that, I was put in wading pools in one-half inch of water as a child (“you can
drowned in an inch of water!”) and developed an unhealthy fear of water by the time I took
swimming lessons at the age of eight. Because of an event that occurred nearly eighty years
ago, I am learning to swim in my thirties, watching my child’s instructors. Due to that same
event, I will do everything to ensure that my daughter can swim. Perhaps Kreider (Gingerich and
Kreider, 1986) was correct when she said:
The value of family history is indispensable. Our life on earth is divided into three
unequal spaces of time, the past the present and future. The future is dependent on the
past. Everything we do or say, whatever we plan for the future, are merely echoes of the
past. Without knowledge of the past we hold no future.
For now, that about says it all.
