SPECIALTY TRAINEE YEAR 4 and 5 IN PAEDIATRICS
1.
ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
This post forms part of a five-year rotation leading to CCST in paediatrics and is part of the southern
axis rotation within the old Oxford Region. The southern axis rotations may involve up to two of the
following units: Reading, Wycombe, Stoke Mandeville, and Wexham Park. All posts rotate to Oxford.

HOSPITAL INFORMATION
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Paediatric Department covers a large child population of
around 125,000. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has 22 cots including 4 funded intensive care cots.
There is also a transitional care arrangement for convalescing infants. There are two General Acute
Paediatric Wards, Lion and Dolphin. Dolphin Ward has 22 beds including a 4 bed High Dependency
Unit and Lion Ward 22 beds including two oncology suites with accommodation for parents. The two
wards are adjacent to each other and are run together. They take medical, surgical and orthopaedic
patients. There is also a Paediatric Day Bed Unit, Kempton, which has 10 beds. All acute referrals are
seen in the Paediatric Admissions Unit, which is currently housed adjacent to the two children's wards.
3. THE POST
This post is one of ten full time Specialist Registrar Posts in Paediatrics at the Royal Berkshire
Hospital. There is a full shift pattern with all ten doctors in the rota. The Pay Band supplement is
1A. Annual leave is at the rate of 5/6 weeks per year. Single accommodation is available at a small
charge; married accommodation is subject to rental less abatement for on-call commitments. Terms
and conditions of employment are in accordance with the current Whitley Council arrangements for
Medical & Dental staff.
The post provides core training in general paediatrics, neonatology, neuro-disability and aspects of
child development. There are 4 posts on general paediatrics, 3 on neonates and 3 in community ( one
core community, one HST community and one based at the Dingley Child Development Centre at the
Battle Hospital in Reading, linked to the Wolfson Centre in London providing specialist training in
neuro-development and complex disability)

ROTATIONS (internal)
NEONATAL PAEDIATRICS
Day to day clinical management of neonates on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Delivery Suite and
Post-natal Wards of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
Supervision and teaching & training of the 4 neonatal SHO’s / one FY2 / 4 ANNP’s
Attendance at neonatal follow-up clinics.

Participation in teaching of medical students, midwives and nurses.
Develop skills in neonatal cerebral ultrasound.
Take part in current audits and research programmes in operation.

GENERAL PAEDIATRICS
Specific Duties
1. Responsibility for children on the acute children’s wards.
2. Cover for Paediatric assessment Unit / Accident & Emergency
3. Special responsibilities within the Paediatric Oncology Service under the supervision of a
Consultant. This registrar to be closely involved in the supervision and treatment of children with
cancer and with procedures and treatment protocols.
General Responsibilities
Day to day clinical management of children on the two acute children’s wards, Dolphin and Lion,
including medical aspects of surgical patients and close liaison with doctors involved from other
specialties.
Cover for paediatric problems on the Paediatric Assessment Unit and Accident & Emergency Unit.
Provide cover for all acute paediatric referrals from any source.
Supervision and teaching of the 8 paediatric SHO’s on the Acute Children’s Wards and the Paediatric
Day Bed Unit.
Take part in teaching medical students and all teaching activities in the dept.
Attend regular paediatric outpatient clinics.
Acute on-call rota.

PAEDIATRICS IN THE COMMUNITY
Assessment and management of children with developmental problems and complex disability based at
the Dingley Child Development Centre.
Outreach clinics in local schools for children with special needs.
Regular sessions with the Child Psychiatry team.
Work with Child Protection Team including weekly session on the on-call rota.
POST IN NEURO-DEVELOPMENTAL PAEDIATRICS (one year post core specialty post)
Assessment and management of children with developmental problems and complex disability based
on the Child Development Centre.
Outreach work in schools for children with special needs.
Attendance at the Wolfson Centre, Institute of Child Health, London 2.5 days per week under the
supervision of Dr. Catherine De Vile, Consultant Paediatrician.
