The number of births is initially expected to increase in Ninewells by up to 800, giving a total of 3600 – 3700 per annum. Plans are currently underway to change facilities and service arrangements in Ninewells to cope with the additional number of women using the service. A Community Maternity Unit facility will be created in Ninewells with the work commencing this year. Perth Maternity Unit may become a Community Unit in July 2004 where it is envisaged up to 400 women who have a normal pregnancy and no other health problems could give birth in this unit. Community midwives are linked to GP practices. Throughout Tayside Midwives, GPs and Obstetricians follow Tayside Pregnancy Plan which sets out antenatal care pathway for women with high, medium and low risk pregnancies. 11
