"If we really loved the good God, we should make it our joy and happiness to come and spend a few
moments to adore Him, and ask Him for the grace of forgiveness; and we should regard those moments
as the happiest of our lives." St John Mary Vianney, Curé of Ars
From the Dean’s desk…
Last year our Holy Father Pope Francis, as Bishop of Rome initiated ’24 Hours for the Lord’ on the
Fourth Sunday of Lent in the churches within his diocese, and invited his brother Bishops to do
likewise in their dioceses throughout the world.
“Among the goals of the New Evangelisation is to make more central the Sacrament of
Penance … the above proposal [24 Hours for the Lord] is addressed to the entire Church,
with the intention of creating a powerful tradition, one which will be held annually on the
Fourth Sunday of Lent.”
Pope Francis addressing all the bishops of the world.
Following Pope Francis’ desire and with Bishop Mark’s encouragement and support at the Cathedral
we will be holding ’24 Hours for the Lord 2015’ which means that the Cathedral will be open next
weekend from the celebration of Mass at 8am on Saturday until 8:30am Mass on Sunday morning.
Throughout this time there will Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist and the
opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Penance (Confession). It would be wonderful to see as
many parishioners as possible coming to pray and to receive the great sacrament of God’s mercy in
going to Confession during these 24 hours of prayer at our Cathedral. You are welcome to come and
pray for a short while or longer according to your needs, but it is amazing the graces that God grants
during these time of extended prayer and in making our confession. As St John Vianney reminded his
parishioners: “It is not the sinner who comes back to God in order to ask Him forgiveness, but rather
God who runs after the sinner and helps him come back to Him”.
Do use this opportunity to come back to God and to be restored to that same state as when you were
first baptised.
There is nothing more important than coming to spend a little time with the Lord and again the words
of St John Vianney, reminds us that "We should consider those moments spent before the Blessed
Sacrament as the happiest of our lives.”
Do try and make the effort between 8am Saturday 14th March – 8:30am Sunday 15th March to make a
visit and go to confession to one of the priests.

Easter Lilies
This year I would like to start the tradition of ‘Easter Lilies’. This is where parishioners can
donate the cost of a lily stem in remembrance of a departed loved one. These stems of lilies
become the Easter flowers in the Cathedral. There will be a framed list of loved ones in whose
memory the lilies have been bought. Each lily stem costs £3.
Please see the sign up sheet for volunteers to assist with the watching during the 24 Hours for the Lord. Please try
and put your name down. The more the merrier! Canon Jonathan
