Windy City's WBBM-TV certified most accurate by WeatheRate
Forecast verification experts WeatheRate certified Viacom owned and operated WBBM-TV as the most
accurate in Chicago for the period September 1, 2004 through February 28, 2005.
The Arizona-based company crowns TV meteorologists across the country as the most accurate in their
market by comparing forecasts with actual weather conditions. WeatheRate verifies high and low
temperatures, sky cover, precipitation, snow accumulation, wind and fog. Accuracy in forecasting severe
weather and timing of precipitation also comes into play.
"At CBS 2, we place a strong emphasis on accuracy in weather forecasting because we know our viewers
are depending on us to get it right. It's an honor to be recognized by an independent research company for
delivering on that promise more consistently than any of our competitors," said Carol Fowler, WBBM’s Vice
President of News.
Using a business model similar to J.D. Power and Associates, WeatheRate conducts independent research
at their own expense. At the end of each WeatheRating period, the company offers its seal of approval only
to the most accurate station in each television market. Referring to a recent AP-Ipsos poll about forecast
accuracy, WeatheRate President Bruce Fixman said, “The poll confirms what we already know – TV is by far
the most popular source of weather information. Some forecasters are indeed better than others, and
because we’re not affiliated with TV stations or the companies that own them, the public can trust us to tell
them who is really the most accurate.”
