Here are some phrases, sentences and words that could be used to extend children who know
and can use the letter-sounds in Jolly Phonics basic code when the rest of the class need more
revision.
These children can read them without help, copy them and draw a picture to show they
understand them.

ran next to him. Alan held a red belt in his hand and his dog
held the end of it. His mum and dad sat in the setting sun on
the bank and had a rest. A sad man got up on a big box. He
had lost his golf stick. It was wet and bent in a pond.
The Tent

Max went in his tent. He had a red vest on. He got up on top
of the quilt on his camp bed and did a big jump! He did disrupt
his dad’s rest and his dad felt upset. His mum just sat next to
the lamp and had a big muffin.
His dad kept carrots in a box in the tent. A rabbit had run in
the tent to get a carrot. It hid in the box.
The Crash

Fred sat in the shop with his bag of fish and chips and a drink
of milk. The planks in the shop had polish on them. Bill ran in
on the planks. He had not had lunch yet. He went to grab
Fred’s lunch, but Fred held the bag with the fish and chips
and did not let Bill get it. Bill was in such a rush that he slid
on the polish and fell with a crash. He felt a lot upset as he
sat up on the planks. But in the end, Fred did hand him six
chips and a bit of fish.
The Stuck Car

Carlos went to the farm in his car. He tried to park it, but it
got stuck in the mud in the farmyard. It didn’t start. Carlos
put part of a carpet on the mud in front of the wheels. Then
the car did start. Carlos was glad!
The Tunnel

At sunset Alexander and Batman went in a tunnel. Alexander
had a red hat on and Batman had a magnet. It was wet in the
tunnel. A cobweb went on Alexander and a bug ran up
Batman’s leg. A big rat ran in and hid. Alexander and Batman
did not panic or get upset, but let the rat sit in the mud.
The Pink Men

Six kids sit chatting on a red rug with a black rucksack and a
picnic. Ducks swim on the pond next to them and a fox pants
in the grass.
Hidden from the kids, a rocket crashes on a big rock and
seven grinning pink men from a distant planet step from it and
jog across the grass. The kids’ dog, Ben, is quick. He runs and
jumps up at the pink men. A pink man grabs Ben and Ben yelps,
but cannot get back to the picnic.

Can Ben get the pink men to drop him? Will the pink men lift
Ben up into the rocket? Can the kids stop them from getting
Ben in the rocket? Will the men kill Ben?
Will the grinning men pat Ben and bring him back to the kids?
Then will the kids hand the pink men packets of crisps and
drinks from the picnic and help them fix the rocket?
