Student Learning Outcomes for Reading 960 Upon completion of Reading 960 the student will: Condition of Learning: Students will be able to demonstrate the following outcomes on readings at the pre- collegiate level. 1. Apply vocabulary-building strategies to improve their analysis of readings. 2. Demonstrate a literal comprehension of readings, through identification and analysis of main ideas, supporting details and rhetorical patterns of organization and development. 3. Perceive themselves as growing in reading competence. Objectives for Reading 960 1. 2. Demonstrate sufficient vocabulary and language development to allow for reading and written expression at a pre-collegiate level. 3. Recognize the main idea of a paragraph in pre-collegiate level readings. 4. Recognize supporting details in paragraphs in pre-collegiate level readings. 5. Understand organizational patterns and relationships of ideas in pre-collegiate level readings. 6. Apply word attack skills including phonics, syllabication, and dictionary skills to read and spell words at a pre-collegiate level. 7. Recognize and apply written context to inform vocabulary knowledge at a precollegiate level. Student Learning Outcomes for Reading 961 Upon completion of Reading 961 the student will: Condition of Learning: Students will be able to demonstrate the following outcomes on readings approaching college level. 1. Apply vocabulary-building strategies to improve their analysis of readings. 2. Demonstrate a literal comprehension of readings, through identification and analysis of main ideas, supporting details and rhetorical patterns of organization and development. 3. Critically analyze and evaluate reading material; make inferences; determine a writer’s purpose and tone; and apply rhetorical reading strategies. 4. Monitor positive and negative comprehension signals and apply appropriate strategies to correct incomplete comprehension in a variety of reading modes. 5. Perceive themselves as achieving college level reading skills. Objectives for Reading 961 1. Apply knowledge of vocabulary commonly used in college reading, writing, and speaking. 2. Identify main idea in reading material approaching college level. 3. Identify supporting details in reading material approaching college level. 4. Identify organizational patterns and relationships of ideas in reading material approaching college level. 5. Utilize graphic organizers (mapping, outlining, summarizing) as a method of organizing ideas in prose reading. 6. Apply contextual clues as a method of improving comprehension through informing vocabulary in reading approaching college level.. 7. Apply critical thinking skills including distinguishing fact from opinion, making inferences, and identifying author’s purpose and tone in reading material approaching college level. 8. Apply reading and study techniques to enhance comprehension of college textbooks. Student Learning Outcomes for Reading 053 Upon completion of Reading 053 students will have achieved proficiency in reading by being able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes: Condition of Learning: Students will be able to demonstrate the following outcomes on college level readings. 1. Apply vocabulary-building strategies to improve their analysis of college level readings. 2. Demonstrate a literal comprehension of college level readings, through identification and analysis of main ideas, supporting details and rhetorical patterns of organization and development. 3. Critically analyze and evaluate college-level reading material; make inferences; determine a writer’s purpose and tone; and apply rhetorical reading strategies. 4. Monitor positive and negative comprehension signals and apply appropriate strategies to correct incomplete comprehension in a variety of reading modes. 5. Demonstrate a range of reading rates according to reading purpose: prose at 500 wpm or above, with 70% comprehension; study reading at 250 wpm with 90%100% comprehension. 6. Students will perceive themselves as competent college level readers. 7. Instructor’s will perceive students as competent college readers.
