Rough and Fuzzy
Approaches
Richard Jensen
Qiang Shen
Richard Jensen received the B.Sc. degree
in computer science from Lancaster
University, U.K., and the M.Sc. and Ph.D.
degrees in artificial intelligence from the
University of Edinburgh, U.K. He is a Lecturer
with the Department of Computer Science at
Aberystwyth University, working in the
Advanced Reasoning Group. His research
interests include rough and fuzzy set theory;
pattern recognition; information retrieval;
feature selection; and swarm intelligence. He
has published over 25 peer-refereed articles
in these areas.
Qiang Shen is a professor with the
Department of Computer Science at
Aberystwyth University, and an honorary
fellow at the University of Edinburgh. His
research interests include computational
intelligence; fuzzy and qualitative modeling;
reasoning under uncertainty; pattern
recognition; and knowledge refinement and
reuse. Dr Shen is an associate editor of the
IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems and of
the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics (Part B), and an editorial board
member of the Fuzzy Sets and Systems
Journal amongst others. He has published
over 200 peer-refereed papers in academic
journals and conferences on topics within
artificial intelligence and related areas.
A fundamental introduction to
feature selections with an
emphasis on rough and fuzzy sets
Computational Intelligence and Feature Selection provides
a high-level audience with both the background and
fundamental ideas behind feature selection with an
emphasis on those techniques based on rough and fuzzy
sets, including their hybridizations. It introduces set theory,
fuzzy set theory, rough set theory, and fuzzy-rough set
theory, and illustrates the power and efficacy of the feature
selection described using real-world applications and
worked examples. Program files implementing major
algorithms covered, together with the necessary instructions
and datasets, are available on the Web.
Key features:
 Provides a critical review of feature selection
methods, with particular emphasis on their current
limitations.
 Offers introductory material regarding all theoretical
concepts involved, with the aim of bringing the
reader to a full understanding of rough, fuzzy and
fuzzy-rough set theories irrespective of their
background.
 Draws on real world applications, with worked
examples, that illustrate the power and efficacy of
the feature selection approaches.
