Platte County Fair 2013 20 21 How to Properly Mat a Photograph 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Choose your mat. Measure the size of the photo. A proper mat should be no bigger than one size more than the original. For example, if your photo is 5x7, it should be matted to a total size of 8x10. If your photo is 8x10, it should be matted to no more than 11x14; an 11x14 photo should be matted to no more than 16x20 etc. Use a mat color that will enhance your photograph. You will also need a piece of mounting board (can be poster board) the exact same size as your mat. Place a piece of clean paper on the tabletop to protect your photo. Lay the photo upside down on the table. Put a piece of acid-free tape along one edge of the photo (usually the top), allowing half of the tape to hang over the edge of the photo. Turn the photo right-side up. Place the mat over the photo. Move the mat until the photo is centered in the window of the mat. Press down on the mat so the tape is attached to the back of the mat. Carefully lift the mat and turn upside-down without disturbing the photo. Tape the photo to the mat, being careful that it stays flat and even. Press down on the tape to guarantee that it will stick to the mat. While mat and photo are face down, place several pieces of acid-free double sided tape to the back of the mat. It will take a large amount of tape because of the heat and humidity at the fair, Line up the corners of the mounting board (from step 2) and the mat. Carefully press down around the edges where the double stick tape has been applied to the mat. Photo is now matted and mounted on a sandwich back. Label photo with lot, class number, name and address of exhibitor on the reverse side of the exhibit.
