Archaeology Theme Day
Dear Families of RSA children,
Every year RSA devotes two days of study and activities to two particular themes. This school year
RSA1 (Eureka Site) will experience an Archaeology Theme Day on February 26, 2010 and a
Greco/Roman Theme Day on May 14, 2010. These fantastic days are a part of what makes RSA such a
unique learning environment for your child(ren).
The Archaeology Theme Day Middle School team is seeking your help. There are three ways you
can support this theme day to make it a success.
1.
The first way is to volunteer to be a classroom presenter in your child’s classroom. There will
be four (possibly more) classroom presenters in each classroom. The teachers have already
selected the activities that will be presented. It would be your job to decorate the room, set
up the afternoon prior to the theme day, teach the activity to classes rotating through your
room, and clean up at the end of the theme day. You would be presenting the same activity
4-5 times in fifty minute segments from 9:00 am to 1:50 pm.
Here are the activities that we have planned:
Mrs. Allexy – Clay Pots (Making Pinch Pots or Coil Pots)
In this activity students would be shown how to make either a pinch pot or a
coil pot by the Parent Volunteers. Students will then work to complete an
individual pot. Four to six parent volunteers are needed. There is no
chairperson or leader for this activity as of yet. Any Volunteers?
Contact Mrs. Allexy if you have further questions!
Mr. Burkett – Ancient Dance
Suzanne Sullivan will present ancient dances for the students to watch and
participate in. No supplies are needed. No other volunteers necessary.
Ms. Brown – Ancient Foods
Students will have the opportunity to sample foods that were eaten during
ancient times. Four to six parent volunteers are needed.
Contact Ms. Brown if you have further questions!
Mrs. Dunaj – Ancient Construction (Pyramids/temples/columns). Students will
construct pyramids from basic supplies that will challenge their thinking
skills. Students will also construct 3D columns in three Greek styles.
Four to six volunteers needed. Straws and copy paper are needed.
Contact Mrs. Dunaj if you have further questions!
Mr. Jones – Archaeological Dig Students will participate in simulated archaeological
dig activities. Four to six volunteers are needed.
Contact Mr. Jones if you have further questions!
2.
The second way you can volunteer is to be willing to do home jobs. Some of the activities
teachers have chosen need some prep work done prior to the theme day. You would be
contacted by one of the teachers and supplies would be sent home to you. You would return
the prepared supplies prior to the theme day.
3.
The third way you can volunteer is to donate supplies or be a supply runner. You may be
asked to order specific supplies on the internet or requested to find certain supplies in town.
Please indicate if you can help, and how you would like to help on Archaeology Theme Day. Return this
form to your child’s teacher by JANUARY 29th.
Thank you so much!
