I have been practising as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at the Conquest Hospital
as part of East Sussex Healthcare for over 15 years. I have been fortunate to be able to
develop my interests at the Conquest in conjunction with my medical and non-medical
colleagues. For the last 8 years, in addition to my clinical interests, I have been focussing on
issues around clinical management, governance and financial balance. These skills have also
enabled me to develop my interest in medico-legal work.
Clinical Practice
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
I have a keen interest in Obstetrics and labour ward management and am fully competent in
the day to day running of the Obstetric Unit. In collaboration with my Consultant and
midwifery colleagues I review the Delivery suite guidelines at the Conquest Hospital using
evidence based and best practice guidelines where appropriate. Until 2005 I was the
nominated Delivery suite lead at the Conquest Hospital and more recently have been giving
active support to my new colleagues in this area. I actively participate in CNST development
needs and assisted the team in achieving Level 2 CNST status in maternity services in 2012.
I am a firm believer in offering appropriate models of care to our pregnant population and
offer a regular antenatal clinic in Crowborough for women who may wish to consider a
midwifery led birth at our birthing centres. For the last 6 years I have been leading the
development of new models of care in Obstetric practice and have led the temporary
reconfiguration of Consultant led care onto the Conquest site.
I provide a comprehensive gynaecological service to the local population with a special
interest in Reproductive medicine. I have been actively involved in the development of a
“one-stop” gynaecological service encompassing transvaginal ultrasound and out-patient
hysteroscopy.
6
I am able to diagnose all gynaecological malignancies and have also gained exposure to their
surgery. I am competent in the interpretation of urodynamic studies and in performing routine
urogynaecological surgical techniques. I have always been keen to further develop my own
surgical skills and help in the training of more junior staff.
I secured financial assistance from the League of Friends to purchase the “Harmonic scalpel”
for laparoscopic surgery.
Infertility and Reproductive Endocrinology
I am proficient in the management of the infertile couple and have been able to develop a
research interest in this field. I am competent in the assessment, investigation and treatment
of the infertile couple and have dedicated Fertility clinics at the Conquest Hospital. I provide
a comprehensive fertility service including ovulation induction using clomiphene citrate and
exogenous gonadotrophins and intra-uterine insemination. I am competent in the monitoring
of follicular growth, superovulation and oocyte retrieval using ultrasound techniques and
have for the last 9 years provided a comprehensive NHS and Private IVF service for the local
East Sussex population through the Esperance Hospital, Eastbourne.
I have extensive experience in surgery related to the infertile woman and in particular, am
competent in laparoscopic surgical techniques including the laparoscopic treatment of
endometriosis.
7
Management, Administration and Committee Work
1) Local
As a Consultant my day to day job encompasses all aspects of management and am keen to
build upon my experience and seek advice where appropriate.
For the last 6 years in addition to local management duties, I have led the ongoing
reconfiguration discussions in Maternity and Newborn models of care at ESHT. In particular,
I am the Lead clinical advisor to the Trust Board in terms of recommending safe and
sustainable delivery model for Consultant led care. I led the temporary reconfiguration of
services for safety reasons at the Conquest site and am involved in the ongoing public
consultation on this issue.

Teaching, Audit and CPD
I enjoy teaching and take an active interest in helping SHOs and Registrars relate theory to
practice and acquire new clinical skills. I often help colleagues preparing for the DRCOG and
MRCOG examinations and examine at the Conquest MRCOG course. I regularly teach
medical and midwifery students and have taught final year students preparing for their final
Obstetrics and Gynaecology examination on both an informal and formal basis. I have
lectured at a number of Post-Graduate meetings within the hospitals that I have worked, and
continue to do so at Conquest Hospital. I recognise the importance of medical audit in the
assessment of our clinical practice and continue to develop my involvement in this area. I
participate in CPD and completed my third 5 year cycle for the RCOG in December 2012.
Interests
Outside medicine, I am a keen tennis player in the summer months, although nowadays I
struggle to keep up with my son !
