Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) – Organizational Structure
1. Institutional Level SLOs
Library and Learning Support Services SLOs (final approval pending)
 access and effectively utilize available campus Library and Learning
Support Services
 apply knowledge learned and competencies gained from using Library and
Learning Support Services to academic coursework and assignments.
 demonstrate information competency skills needed to meet the research
demands of academic course work and life long learning.
2. Program Level Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOs)
PSLOs for Library Services
 use information resources available through the library in support of class
assignments and course instructional objectives.
 demonstrate a knowledge and utilization of the broad range of library
resources and services available (i.e.: interlibrary loan, remote access to
databases, eBooks, Ask a Librarian etc.).
 utilize the library as a resource center for independent study and lifelong
learning.
 acquire needed Information Competency skills. These skills entail
demonstrating a proficiency in locating, retrieving, organizing, critically
evaluating, analyzing, synthesizing, and communicating information in all
its various formats.

 identify relevant Information Competency skills needed to supplement and
enhance existing knowledge
 understand the roles of information and research as they apply to personal,
academic, occupational and professional development.

environments outside of LMC.
 use appropriate information types and sources when problem solving.

CSLOs for Library Studies 14: Library Research and Information Literacy
Skills




Determine the nature and extent of information needed and construct and
implement an effective search strategy to locate relevant information.
Employ and effectively use a variety of information research tools to
locate and retrieve information in print, electronic, media formats etc.
Select, evaluate and synthesize relevant information to meet a research
need.
Apply principles of scholarly and ethical research, such as proper citation
formats and respect for intellectual property.
CSLOs for Library Studies 17: Introduction to Internet Information
Resources (in development 3/2008)







Explain the basic organization of information on the Internet.
Decide when the Internet would be an appropriate search tool for their
research.
Identify and utilize basic features of Internet web browsers.
Describe the function of and use of search tools in locating information on
the Internet, including search engines and subject directories.
Develop and implement an effective and efficient search strategy when
doing Internet research.
Evaluate the quality and usefulness of information found on the Internet.
Demonstrate academic integrity by properly citing sources found on the
Internet.
4. Orientation Level SLOs
English 100: College Composition (pending approval, FA 2008)
After participating in the library orientations, students will be able to:





Describe the research process used for academic research.
Differentiate between the LMC Library online resources and general
Internet sites.
Locate and access appropriate sources needed for their research paper.
Decide when citation is necessary, and integrate source information into
essays using quotes (long and short) and paraphrasing, following MLA
guidelines.
Demonstrate an ethical approach to research by defining plagiarism and
outlining how to avoid it.
