COURSE DESCRIPTION
The 33rd annual Infectious Diseases of Adults postgraduate course is designed to
review state-of-the-art information in the diagnosis and management of important
infectious disease problems in current medical practice. This highly rated course focuses
on major clinical syndromes and management controversies in infectious disease. Topics
with major impact on clinical practice are emphasized including: antibiotic resistance,
sexually transmitted diseases, endocarditis, vaccination, hospital epidemiology,
infections in pregnancy, zoonotic infections, parasitology, new viral pathogens,
molecular diagnostics, newer guidelines for the prevention of tuberculosis and
bioterrorism. The care of the patient with HIV/AIDS is discussed in detail: the biology of
the infection, epidemiology, antiviral therapies, ambulatory management, and the
prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections. The management of infections in the
growing population of immunocompromised hosts will be reviewed. Emphasis is given
to recent developments in the management and prevention of infections, including the
newer antibiotics, new vaccines, antiviral and antiparasitic agents, new diagnostic
techniques and recommendations for prophylaxis in travelers.
This course focuses on advances in infectious diseases and their application to direct
patient care. Didactic lectures and case-based presentations are both featured. An
extensive, well-referenced syllabus supplements the presentations. Ample opportunity for
interaction with the expert faculty is provided, including interactive clinical sessions and
formal and informal discussions of cases provided by the faculty and by course
participants.
