The various education programmes and study days outlined in this booklet are structured to facilitate and support the
ongoing educational development of all nurses and midwives throughout New Zealand. The education offered will
contribute to the development of nursing & midwifery practice and support personal and professional development of all
those who participate. This book contains educational opportunities that will be offered in 2009.
There are also a number of specific Capital & Coast District Health Board (C&C DHB) collaborative programmes offered
through other institutions, some of which are extramural. These are advertised in the PDU.
It is hoped that you take advantage of the opportunities offered.

How to Register for a Programme / Study Day

Choose the study day that you feel meets your learning requirements and discussed with your Nurse/Midwife
Educator or Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist and Charge Nurse/Midwife Manager/Team Leader to ensure that
you have study leave available and it can be rostered appropriately. Study day requirements should be part of
your professional development plan and discussed at your performance appraisal.

Contact the relevant Course Facilitator or Coordinator for details or contact the Professional Development Unit.

Ask your CNE to book you onto the study day on One Staff (or whoever undertakes this on your ward/unit).

If the study day is not featured in One Staff, complete and return the relevant registration form (attached)

If you are unable to attend a course or study day please advise the appropriate Course Coordinator as soon as
possible. Some of these study days have a waiting list and we need to reallocate your space.

There is a cost for some of the courses and study days so please contact the appropriate Course
Coordinator for further information.

NB – Occasionally study days are cancelled or venues are changed – we will endeavour to inform all potential
attendees should this happen, so please ensure that you provide us with up to date contact details – often a
home or cell phone number is more appropriate than a ward/unit number.

Graduate School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health
Victoria University of Wellington
Registered nurses, midwives and health professionals from all over New Zealand choose the Graduate School of
Nursing, Midwifery and Health for their postgraduate study. Their disciplines and experience vary widely; some have
been nursing for years while others are relatively new to the profession; and some work in hospitals while others are
based in independent practice.
The Graduate School offers coursework programmes to suit this diversity, all designed to challenge, inform and educate and to help you to contribute greater value to your own and the wider profession.
Research-based programmes
On our own and in partnership with district health boards like Capital & Coast DHB and other research groups nationally
and internationally, we explore and address key issues affecting nursing, midwifery and health. Our research strengths lie
in normal birth, cultural safety, mental health, historical inquiry in nursing and midwifery, evidence-based practice and
practice development.
If your passionate about a subject that you know would benefit from close scrutiny and analysis, the Graduate School is a
great place to do research. With a full range of research courses and training programmes, a strong team of academic
professionals to support you and excellent access to extensive online library resources, you’ll have everything you need
for your study.

Massey University
Massey University has been providing programmes for Nurses and midwives continuously since 1973. From 2000 a
major focus has been the development of programmes focused on clinical practice and many students choose the
clinically focused Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Masters of Nursing programmes of study. These
Nursing Council approved programmes are chosen by registered nurses to support the development of advanced
practice and for Nurse Practitioner preparation (including prescribing).
44
Nursing lecturers at Massey University have significant research experience and the nursing school was ranked first
out of all nursing schools and departments assessed in the 2007 Tertiary Education Commission’s research quality
ranking exercise – the Performance Based Research Fund. The department is focused on the development of
international research and scholarship to underpin clinical practice.
Midwives and nurses also explore a wide variety of topics through research and Massey University offers postgraduate
research degrees such as the Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy, which include a
significant research project as part, or all, of the programme of study.
Massey University offers papers at all three campuses: Wellington, Palmerston North and Albany and is also a major
provider of undergraduate nursing and midwifery programmes.

University of Otago – Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences
The Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences is one of the University of Otago's three clinical schools. The
School is an acknowledged centre of excellence in health research, postgraduate training and undergraduate education.
It has fostered links with a number of health services providers and leading specialists and regularly wins a significant
proportion of contestable research funding.
Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences offers postgraduate degree courses designed to extend the
knowledge of all Health care professionals such as nurses, doctors and other allied health professionals. There are a
flexible range of study options, with over 50 papers to choose from for postgraduate certificates and diplomas. Many
programmes are available through distance learning. There are Masters in Health Sciences or specialist disciplines and
certificate and diploma subjects include child mental health, child health, rehabilitation and a range of other topics.
There are increasing numbers of nurses studying in the Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, situated
next door to the hospital. Many courses and papers are now available which are extremely relevant to nursing and
interdisciplinary practice. For example, nurses who have completed studies in the Department of Primary Health Care
and General Practice have found these courses particularly topical, targeting both their clinical and academic needs.
Course advice is always important in planning a postgraduate education pathway. Each department has a dedicated
course advisor who would be more than happy to discuss your individual education plan.
Focus on Primary Health Care
A number of distance taught interdisciplinary papers are available to meet the needs of primary health care professionals
and which lead to Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and interface with the Masters programme. A 1½ day
Study Skills programme is held immediately prior to the start of each semester.

The first Hospice in New Zealand - the Mary Potter - was established in 1979 at Calvary Hospital in Wellington. In
February 1988, the Little Company of Mary gifted the Hospice to the people of Wellington. Mary Potter offers a modular
teaching programme similar to the one offered at Te Omanga Hospice.
While the name of Mary Potter lives on, the Hospice is now an independent non-sectarian charitable trust, governed by
The Mary Potter Hospice Foundation Board of Trustees on behalf of the people of Wellington.
The Mary Potter Hospice is renowned internationally for its work in palliative care. Today hospice care is concerned with
providing a holistic approach to the care of people with emphasis on the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of
patients and their families, during the course of their illness and for the time of bereavement following death.
