An assessment of your contraceptive needs will be made at this time. What’s “The Point”? A friendly and confidential service for young people aged 18 years and under. The following services are provided free of charge: Testing for sexually transmitted infections Pregnancy testing and advice Condoms Contraceptive advice Advice about sex & relationships WHAT IS A ROUTINE SCREEN? A routine screen may include taking samples, either by yourself or a clinician, a urine test and a blood test to test for the different sexually transmitted infections. This will be discussed with you by the clinician you see. You will not have tests for any sexual infection without a discussion first, and your consent. EXAMINATION Following your consultation, you will be examined by the same person and some tests will be taken depending on your problem. WHO WILL I SEE? Your first visit to the clinic will normally take one hour, although this may be longer for walk-in clinics. REGISTRATION If you are a new patient you will first see a receptionist who will ask you your name, further registration will take place in one of our confidential registration booths. If you prefer to see a male or female clinician please let the receptionist know so that we can arrange this for you. PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY Your confidentiality is important to us and protected by the law under the Venereal Disease Act. Your confidential information can be accessed by staff within the clinic involved in your care. Information will not be given to someone outside of the clinic, for example your GP, Social Worker or Parent, unless we explain why and ask your permission. We will only ever pass information without your consent if we are concerned for your personal safety. For more information please read the separate leaflet – ‘Confidentiality, Your Rights.’ For most female examinations, a sexual health nurse will also be present. For male examinations a nurse can also be present if you prefer. Please advise the practitioner should you require a nurse to be present during your examination. Girls will either have: Samples taken from inside the vagina using a speculum (as for a smear test) and one from the urethra (water passage) OR Self taken swab from the vagina. Boys will either have: A sample taken from the urethra (water passage) and a urine test. OR Just a urine sample. You will be asked about your reasons for attending the clinic and any symptoms or concerns you may have. You will also be asked questions about your general health and some specific ones about your sexual health. v/patient leaflets/The Point – general leaflet Sept 15.doc The HIV Test This is a simple blood test that detects antibodies to the HIV virus. These antibodies take up to 4 weeks to develop after HIV enters the bloodstream. This means waiting for one month after the time you think you may have been infected before having the test. If you have not put yourself at risk in this time, the result will give you an accurate picture of your HIV status (it is therefore important to practice safer sex during that month). BOYS Gonorrhoea Chlamydia Urethritis HIV Syphilis GIRLS Gonorrhoea Chlamydia Trichomonas vaginalis Thrush Bacterial Vaginosis HIV Syphilis RESULTS How will I get them? Depending if you had symptoms some of your results may be available at the end of your first visit. Your final test results, including your HIV result, will be sent to you by a discreet text message - usually in 4 days’ time. If you prefer you can telephone for your results at an arranged time or collect your results in person. TREATMENT What will happen if I need treatment? If you have an infection we will explain what the infection is and will give you some treatment. Leaflets on all sexual infections are available in the consulting rooms and in the examination rooms. If you cannot find what you need please ask a member of staff to help you. All treatments for infections are free and are dispensed directly to you before leaving the clinic. CONTRACEPTION Contraception will be offered if appropriate – here at The Point we can offer a wide range of different contraceptions, including the hormonal pill, hormonal implant and coils. Please discuss which method is best for you with the health practitioner who sees you.
