WHAT IS A ROUTINE SCREEN?
A routine screen may include taking samples, either by
yourself or a clinician, a urine test and a blood test to test
for the different sexually transmitted infections. This will be
discussed with you by the clinician you see.
You will not have tests for any sexual infection without
a discussion first, and your consent.
EXAMINATION
Following your consultation, you will be examined by the
same person and some tests will be taken depending on
your problem.
WHO WILL I SEE?
Your first visit to the clinic will normally take one hour,
although this may be longer for walk-in clinics.
REGISTRATION
If you are a new patient you will first see a receptionist who
will ask you your name, further registration will take place in
one of our confidential registration booths. If you prefer to
see a male or female clinician please let the receptionist
know so that we can arrange this for you.
PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY
Your confidentiality is important to us and protected by the
law under the Venereal Disease Act. Your confidential
information can be accessed by staff within the clinic
involved in your care. Information will not be given to
someone outside of the clinic, for example your GP, Social
Worker or Parent, unless we explain why and ask your
permission. We will only ever pass information without your
consent if we are concerned for your personal safety. For
more information please read the separate leaflet –
‘Confidentiality, Your Rights.’
For most female examinations, a sexual health nurse will
also be present. For male examinations a nurse can also be
present if you prefer. Please advise the practitioner should
you require a nurse to be present during your examination.
Girls will either have:
Samples taken from inside the vagina using a speculum (as

The HIV Test
This is a simple blood test that detects antibodies to the HIV
virus. These antibodies take up to 4 weeks to develop after
HIV enters the bloodstream. This means waiting for one
month after the time you think you may have been infected
before having the test. If you have not put yourself at risk in
this time, the result will give you an accurate picture of your
HIV status (it is therefore important to practice safer sex
during that month).

RESULTS

Depending if you had symptoms some of your results may
be available at the end of your first visit.
Your final test results, including your HIV result, will be sent
to you by a discreet text message - usually in 4 days’ time.
If you prefer you can telephone for your results at an
arranged time or collect your results in person.
TREATMENT
What will happen if I need treatment?
If you have an infection we will explain what the infection is
and will give you some treatment.
Leaflets on all sexual infections are available in the
consulting rooms and in the examination rooms. If you
cannot find what you need please ask a member of staff to
help you.
All treatments for infections are free and are dispensed
directly to you before leaving the clinic.
