Dear ALA Friend: Thank you for your interest to present at the American Leadership Academy’s Cabo Leadership Experience. Each year, we host over 650 college-aged men from more than 70 campuses to participate in leadership education during our winter and spring break sessions. We are very lucky to have so many talented presenters who want to be with us each year that finding room for all those with interest is a real challenge. This process helps us match qualified speakers to appropriate sessions and ensures we cover as much of our core curriculum each session as possible. General sessions cover our core topics, last one hour and include all attendees. Typically these occur during our regular program hours, between 10 AM and 3 PM. We also will include a number of “breakout” sessions for special interest topics. Breakout topics are applicable to a portion of our attendees, such as those with specific majors (finance, computing, etc.) or those with specific professional interests (medicine, law, entrepreneurship). Breakouts also are appropriate for sessions on chapter management. These sessions are held later in the day for those with interest and usually last 60-90 minutes. As our program grows in attendance and popularity, our ranks of prospective speakers also grows. We will continue to do evaluation and assessment each year to help us identify and retain the best speakers possible. But we don’t want to close the door on new presenters either, so we have developed this process. Whether you want to return for another year, or are new to the ALA program, please complete the following document online, or by fax or mail, and return that to me by Oct. 15, for our January session, or Nov. 15 for our March sessions. Supplement with attachments or by E-mail as needed. I’ll review and respond as quickly as possible, so you will have time to make plans if we invite you to present. You may contact me directly with any questions you have about the application or process. My E-mail is TCP@AmericanLA.org. My phone is (877) 257-1458. Thank you again for your interest in working with our students. Most Sincerely, Tom C. Overview of Weekly Curriculum Goals & Potential Topics The following topics are appropriate during a usual week of the CLE program and are consistent with the core curriculum. Speakers may apply to fill topic areas during specific weeks. Our goal is to provide a consistent experience for students each week. Personal Understanding: Attitude, Character, Leadership, Values & Ethics, Goal Setting (individual), Interpersonal Skills, Relationships, Healthy Lifestyles World View: Global Issues, Politics & Citizenship, Democracy & Free-Enterprise, Philanthropy & Service Skills for Success: Negotiation Strategies, Etiquette, Dress for Success, Communications Skills/Public Speaking, Sales & Recruitment, Personal Finance, Interviews/Resume, Motivation/Confrontation, Time Management, Group Dynamics, Group Goal Setting & Problem Solving, Stress Management, Conflict Resolution, Home & Family Life, Legal Concepts, Networking General Topic Break Outs: Banking/Finance, Business, Entrepreneurship, Government/Public Service, Graduate School, Law, Medicine, Science & Technology Chapter Break Outs: Alumni Relations, Chapter Finance, Colony Workshop, Fundraising, Property Management, Risk Management, Ritual Review, Recruitment, Social Programming, the National Fraternity Presentations: General presentations should last no longer than 60 minutes. Broader topics can be condensed to one 60-minute general session and a breakout, or two 60-minute sessions, focusing on two specific topics within the broader theme. See the Speaker Guide for information on more effective presentations to this population. Breakouts can be as much time as the students will allow, but usually are 30-60 minutes plus discussion time. The selection of speakers for each week will be based on: 1) Ability/Qualification to present on topic 2) Proven record of effective speaking to college students 3) Availability and willingness to attend at own expense to present 4) Commitment to spend quality time with students, outside of presentations General: The most effective and popular speakers are proven and accomplished leaders with real-world experience, who combine an interesting and engaging presentation with personal time outside the classroom. Much of the success of the CLE program is the connection between speakers/alumni and the undergraduates.
