EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY JOURNAL CLUB (2 ECTS CREDITS) A journal club with the theme of evolutionary biology will begin 23.1. The journal club is aimed at researchers, PhD students and advanced undergraduate students of both ecology and genetics. The idea of the journal club meetings is to discuss recent research articles published in the field of evolutionary biology (ranging from evolutionary ecology to evolutionary genetics). The articles will be chosen so that consecutive 3-4 articles consider the same topic, for which there will first be an introductory review paper. We can also include themes with an applied perspective (e.g. conservation genetics). The aim of the club is to: broaden the views of both ecologists and geneticists interested in evolutionary questions learn about recent advancements in the field practice scientific discussion practice explaining evolutionary topics to people from different fields practice evaluating papers get familiar with different types of scientific journals Students can get 2 study credits for active participation and contribution in the meetings, including the introduction of at least one paper to the others. The club will be organized jointly by researchers in ecology and genetics. The introductory meeting is on Tuesday 23.1.2007 at 12:00 in the genetics coffee room (4th floor, LT2). The number of participants will partly influence the format of the journal club. Please indicate your interest to participate via e-mail to Toni.Laaksonen@utu.fi by 19.1. Describe in the email also your background (genetics/ecology/other, MSc/PhD student/other). The meeting times will be Monday 12:00-13:30 unless this time is unsuitable due to overlapping advanced courses etc. There will be eight sessions during the spring.
