The Mural Arts Program began in 1984 as an Anti-Graffiti Network and was transformed into the Murals Art Program by Jane Golden, whom convinced the artist to put their illegal work to good use. There are more than 3,000 murals around the city and each has a story of their own. The program not only makes a difference with the look of Philadelphia but also with the community by working with at risk youth and criminals to provide restorative healing through art education.
