VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT The Department of Health has a career opportunity for qualified candidates for the following position: Title Research Scientist 3 Microbiology [Special Services (Hourly)] Posting Number 67-15 Position Number 804616 Salary $33.24/hr - $37.91/hr (14 months) Number of Positions 1 Posting Period * From: 5/06/15 To: 5/20/15 Location: Scope of Eligibility/Open to: New Jersey Department of Health, Public Health and Environmental Applicants who Meet the Requirements Laboratories, Public Health Laboratory Services GENERAL DESCRIPTION The RS-3 scientist will isolate, identify, confirm, and characterize bioterrorism (BT) agents and/or other disease outbreak pathogens in clinical specimens, and environmental & food samples. These laboratory procedures must be conducted in strict adherence to the select agent regulation 42 CFR Part 73 and the CLIA regulation. The incumbent will conduct research, procure extramural funding and publish peer-reviewed articles. Additionally, the RS-3 will investigate, analyze, develop, validate, and implement molecular detection tests for the identification of disease outbreak pathogens that pose a public health threat and/or emergency. The laboratorian will provide training to PHEL staff in LRN confirmatory procedures and rapid screening methods. Furthermore, the incumbent will ensure operational status of advanced, automated instrumentation, such as the Pyrosequencer, Ion Torrent Next Generation (DNA) Sequencer and nucleic acids isolation workstations. Additionally, the RS-3 will be responsible for maintaining an adequate inventory of consumable materials and reagents, and maintain Chain-of-Custody (COC) mandates concerning accession, analyses, and reporting results on samples tested. The incumbent will participate in the housekeeping, rotating schedules for the BSL-3 laboratory and provide contingency and surge capacity for the Public Health Laboratory. Experience in a clinical microbiology, molecular biology or public health laboratory preferred. Experience with Biosafety Level-3 containment practices and agents of bioterrorism or other high-consequence pathogens is desired. Also, experience with Pyrosequencing and/or Next Generation (DNA) Sequencing platforms is desired. REQUIREMENTS (EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / LICENSES) EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master of Science degree in microbiology or other appropriate biological discipline. EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in microbiological analysis or research. NOTE: A Doctorate in a microbiological discipline may be substituted for the experience indicated above. OR EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology or other appropriate biological discipline. EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in microbiological analysis or research AND one (1) year of experience in the operation of high pressure liquid chromatography, flow cytometry, or other appropriate laboratory instruments.
