In the autumn one of our vets, Joe and his wife Anna, went to Bolivia to visit a missionary family who are working out there.
The family were invited out there to work with local churches helping small, isolated rural communities by bringing them basic agricultural training and knowledge and basic veterinary care alongside the church work.
Much of their work involves teaching people how to look after the animals on which they rely for food. They are also involved in developing new ways of growing crops and developing small-scale chicken production.
The locals keep cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, donkeys, cats, dogs and chickens. Most of the animals live a subsistence life and Joe saw many cases of malnutrition. Much of the work is basic, farmers would ask for the injection to make their animals bigger, which would involve giving Ivermectin to worm them and multi vitamins!
Linda (the vet) is quite short of equipment as she works on a not for profit basis, so we are trying to raise money to buy her a microscope.
This will make a massive difference in helping her find out what is going wrong with all the species she works with, helping her help the locals more effectively.
