Polar Animals Polar animals are animals that live in the northern and southern polar regions of the world. They have adapted themselves to survive the harsh climates. I am going to talk about two of them, caribou and penguins. Caribou are also known as reindeer. They are mammals. They only live in the northern polar region and they live on a diet of grass, leaves; tundra plants, mushrooms and in winter lichens. In winter, they migrate south to escape the bitterly cold weather and to find food, travelling up to thirty kilometres per day. Penguins are not mammals and only live in the southern polar region. There are many species of penguins such as the large emperor and the smaller adélie penguin. They only eat fish and can hold their breath for over twenty minutes! This proves very helpful when hunting. So do their waterproof feathers, thick layer of blubber and large round eyes. Polar animals are extraordinary creatures. They can survive the harsh climates of the northern and southern polar regions and we have much to learn from them. By Luke Zeches
