Notes for Nathan Edward Dodge:
Nathan Edward Dodge, my father, was born October 20, 1914, in West Exeter, New
York, and died January 22, 1982, in Dubuque, Iowa.
Imagine an average looking boy. A handsome young man. A gaunt soldier. A
muscular sprinter. A glasses- and cardigan-wearing man with a Santa-like twinkle
in his eye. My dad was all of these.
Son of a Methodist minister and a Canadian farmer's daughter who met picking
hops, Nate was an athlete, beloved brother (and uncle, husband, father, and
grandfather), World War II combat veteran, science teacher, rock hound, flower
presser, wrestling coach, peacemaker, gardener, nap-taker, liverwurst sandwich
eater, iced-tea drinker, cribbage player, ride giver, whistler, long hauler,
quiet mantainer of things needing to be maintained.
As a schoolboy basketball player Nate "could dribble faster than his amazed
opponents could run" (according to a now-yellowed newspaper clipping). As an
adult he was friend alike to old ladies and troubled youth.
His name lives on in a grandson, Nathan Daley Dodge, but his influence lives
more widely in those of us he gently nurtured and encouraged.

Ellen Margelia Dodge, born 03 July 192231; died 24 October
2005 in Cooperstown, Otsego Co., New York31. She married Robert J. Wilber, Jr.
12 December 194432; born 18 June 192333; died 30 May 1995 in Cooperstown, Otsego
Co., New York33.
Notes for Ellen Margelia Dodge:
COOPERSTOWN — Ellen Margelia Wilber, 83, passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, at
Otsego Manor.
Ellen was the youngest of 10 children of the Rev. Wilbur C. Dodge and Katharine
(Smith) Dodge.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Smith, Nathan, Bill, Robert and Harris; and
by her sisters, Ruth, Katharine, Pauline and Lois.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas and his wife, Monica, of Franklin, and Mark
and his wife, Cindy, of Bainbridge. She is also survived by her grandchildren,
Thomas Wilber Jr. of Suffolk, Va., Melanie Wilber of Nyack, Debbie Stockigt of
Bainbridge and William Stockigt of Broadalbin. She also was blessed with three
great-grandchildren; and her pet cat, "Miss Dixie."
Ellen attended Cooperstown Central School, where she was a cheerleader. She took
part in the original Baseball Hall of Fame Induction in 1939. She graduated from
Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in 1942.
On December 12, 1944, Ellen joined her true love, Robert J. Wilber Jr., in
marriage. The marriage ceremony was performed by her father, the Rev. Wilbur,
and devotion flourished for 50 years until the death of her husband in 1995. Her
love was infinite for her husband and still is.
Ellen worked at Scintilla in Sidney during the war years and later, until her
retirement, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in the microbiology labs.
She was a member of the Cooperstown Native Daughters and the Cooperstown United
Methodist Church, which was where her passion and devotion lay. She was a
lifelong, active member, serving for many years as a Sunday school teacher and
choir member.
Her love of flowers, photographs and baking, especially her wonderful apple
pies, will never be forgotten. We also will all remember her ever present "love
of life."
Calling hours will be held at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St.,
Cooperstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at the Cooperstown United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Sundar Samuel and the Rev. William Highfield coofficiating.
Burial in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so desire make
contributions in Ellen’s memory to the Cooperstown United Methodist Church
"Stained Glass Window Fund" care of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66
Chestnut St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service,
Cooperstown and Milford.
