Orton Farmers’ Market Orton, Penrith Cumbria CA10 3RU NEWS RELEASE 17 November 2010 Three generations know their onions Three generations of the Pimlott family were involved in an onion stringing demonstration at Orton Farmers’ market on Saturday with grandfather, Bill Pimlott, demonstrating his skills and creating strings (or ropes) of onions watched by son, William, and grandson, Ben. “Dad’s done this for as long as I can remember,” said William. “It’s rare for him to let us have a go as he can do it so quickly and efficiently but it’s worthwhile as the ropes of onions always sell well at Orton. We’ll have our traditional sticks of Brussel sprouts in time for the December market too. It must be one of the few places in the country where people have been known to queue for Brussels!” Also at the November market, Diana Brown of Tasting Cumbria created and shared a selection of seasonal recipes using a variety of market ingredients. “I made a quick lasagne with a couple of cheats,” said Diana, “using tortilla wraps instead of pasta and crème fraiche instead of a roux sauce. Then there was a smoked fish pizza with fish from Bessy Beck Trout Fishery and a veal and apple dish that used produce from several market stallholders: veal, cream and butter from Winter Tarn, apples from Blue Bell Organics and Spiced Apple Cordial from Kendal Cordials.” Diana continued: “Thank you to all the stallholders whose wonderful food inspired the recipes on Saturday. For those who would like to recreate my recipes at home you can find them on my website at www.pamperedchef.biz/tastingcumbria and there is a link from the Orton Farmers’ Market website (www.ortonfarmers.co.uk) as well.” The November hamper raffle was won by Joy Powdrill of Orton with the runners up hamper going to Dot Coates, also of Orton. Orton Farmers’ Christmas Market opens at 9.30am and runs until 2.30pm on Saturday 11 December. There’ll be carol singing and refreshments in All Saints’ Church, free mince pies and a visit from Santa in the market place and also speciality hot chocolate at Kennedy’s fine chocolates.
