Hunter College School of Education The City University of New York M.S. in Childhood Education (1-6) STUDENT HANDBOOK FOR FIELDWORK COURSES CEDC 700 CEDC 704 CEDC 705 CEDF 709 CEDF 710 FIELD EXPERIENCE GUIDE Students enrolled in all programs leading to New York State certification are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of fieldwork in addition to student teaching and/or the supervised on-the-job practicum. Several courses in the M.S. in Childhood Education program have a field component designed to engage students in classroom observation for 5-10 hours, for a total of 30 hours, prior to the student teaching/practicum experience. The remaining hours are fulfilled through enrollment in CEDC 715: Fieldwork in Reading and Social Studies. The field experience hours will be completed in the following courses: CEDC 700, CEDC 704, CEDC 705 and CEDF 709. Students will be required to document their fieldwork hours and complete field-based assignments related to the didactic course. The fieldwork requirements for these courses are as follows: COURSE NUMBER & TITLE CEDC 700: The Art & Science of Effective Teaching CEDC 704: Teaching Developmental Reading CEDC 705: Mathematics Curriculum and Methods CEDF 709: Child Development CEDF 710: Educational Psychology GRADE LEVEL 4-6 only 1-3 and 4-6 1-3 and 4-6 1-3 only 4-6 only CLOCK HOURS 5 10 (5 hrs. each) 10 (5 hrs. each) 5 5 Field Observations Field-based assignments—specific observations and activities that guide students in the development of their understanding of teaching, learning and curriculum—will be an integral component of the above courses. The purpose of the observation activities is to provide students with an opportunity to develop the skills and dispositions that they will need as future teachers to work effectively with elementary education students. Course instructors will provide a framework to focus students’ observations, and to sort the events of the classroom into manageable and comprehensive categories that have professional relevance to the teacher candidate. 2 Students Who Are Not Employed As Teachers Students who are not currently working as teachers have the following options for conducting their fieldwork: OPTION 1: Identify students/colleagues in your academic class who are currently teaching and would be willing to host a non-teaching student for their observation hours, or OPTION 2: Arrange to conduct the observations at a site of your choice, such as a neighborhood school or a local after-school program. All sites must have a New York State-certified teacher present. Students may conduct the observations in private, stateaccredited elementary schools, but are strongly encouraged to complete at least 15 hours of the total 30 field hours required in these courses in public school settings. Whichever option you select, you are responsible for conducting the fieldwork on the appropriate grade level(s) for the course. Students must present a Letter of Introduction, located on the following page, to the appropriate person at the site. If you plan to visit one of Hunter College’s partner schools, please call beforehand, set an appointment, and bring your school identification. Students Who Are Employed As Teachers Students working as head or assistant teachers in New York City schools (public or stateaccredited private schools) may conduct the field observations in the schools where they are currently teaching. They may not, however, complete the fieldwork hours in their own classrooms. They may observe other classrooms in their school on the appropriate grade level, as per the course requirements. The 5 or 10 observation hours do not have to be consecutive; students may be able to fulfill their hours during the course of a week or two, during preparation periods or lunch hours. In instances where students must conduct observations in grade levels that are not available in their schools, they may choose a nearby school in which to complete their fieldwork. PLEASE NOTE: 1. All field sites must have a New York State-certified teacher present. 2. All students in the M.S. programs in Special Education or TESOL must complete their fieldwork in a general education setting. 3. Students must make a copy of the fieldwork experience confirmation form for their records. The course instructor keeps the original for one semester; then they are discarded. 3 Dear School Administrator/Teacher: Hunter College graduate students enrolled in our teacher education programs must complete field observations as part of their required coursework in child development and methods’ courses. The field experience is an integral part of their coursework and provides the student with a valuable opportunity to relate acquired knowledge about child development and pedagogy to observation of students in elementary schools. We would appreciate your cooperation in allowing _________________________ to observe a class in your school on the following grade levels: 1-3 4-6 The Hunter College student will request of you, as the teacher or administrator, to sign for the student’s time in the classroom. We value your role in the preparation of Hunter College’s teacher education students and thank you for your cooperation in allowing our students to observe in your school/classroom.
