Notes for WILLIAM BEANE:
There is very little evidence that this William Beane is the Father of our Valentine but.... we have to make a few
assumptions along the way, can always be revised if found to be wrong. Note the "e" on the end of Bean, after this
generation the "e" seemed to "fall off" !!!!!

William was christened 11 December 1768 in Saint Paul , Canterbury & died 24 April at age 57 years and it would
appear that he was buried on the same day !!.
OPR Batch # P016541 , 1562 - 1800.
He was the the third William in this family so he did well to make it to 57 years. Apparently the parents were hell bent
on having a "William" to carry on the name , as they are all through the branches / generations and they didn't know
how hard it was going to be for researchers in later years to put them into the correct families !!
General Notes: William ( 1768 - 1925 ) , wife & descendants are in a Pedigree Resource File , accessible on the LDS
website: www.familysearch.com
The owner given on this file is a Graham Anderson whom I haven't been able to contact.
There is no source to any data.soooo lets hope it's all correct !!

5. VALENTINE BEAN (WILLIAM BEANE, WILLIAM ) was born Abt. 1772 in Kent, UK, and died September 1837 in
Kent UK. He married (1) ELIZABETH MAXTED 23 January 1796 in Eythorne, Kent, England., daughter of S AMUEL
MAXTED and ANN MARSH. She was born 1777 in Eyhorne ,Kent, England, and died 27 June 1810 in Eythorne, Kent
UK. He married (2) SARAH MARSH 2 November 1811 in Eythorne, Kent, England.. She was born Abt. 1780 in Kent,
England, and died Abt. 1820 in Kent, England. He married (3) ANN HUDSON Abt. 1820 in Kent , England, daughter of
JAMES HUDSON and MARY BAKER. She was born 23 October 1801 in Eythorne,Kent, England, and died June 1850 in
Tilmanstone, kent, UK.
Notes for VALENTINE BEAN:
Information from Daphne Argent , Rochester, Kent states:
Valentines first wife was Elizabeth Maxted to whom 6 children were born, Elizabeth died June 27, 1810 ,in Eythorne &
Valentine remarried to Sarah Marsh a widow on November 2, 1811 in Eythorne to which at least another 6 more
children were born in Eythorne.
Valentine 's occupation was a Thatcher. .
Eythorne Composite Register Roll No. 413 (1694- 1812) Item 10 states: Sarah as Valentines wife.
Place of abode: Eythorne.
We don't have any information on what happened to Sarah, as it appears as if Valentine then married a third time to
"Ann" to which another 5 children were born
From Researcher Bruce Ewan - General Notes:
Valentine died between Oct.1833 & Sept. 1837. He was alive at the christening of his daughter , Mary (1833-1845)
There is no record of a "Valentine Bean" dying after Sept. 1837, when civil registration came into effect.
Notes for ELIZABETH MAXTED:
Elizabeth was christened 16th. November 1777 in Eythorne, Kent
Elizabeth was 33 years old when she died.
Notes for SARAH MARSH:
Sarah Marsh was a widow when she married Valentine .
She was about 41 yrs. old when she died.
Notes for ANN HUDSON:
Ann was only 48 yrs. old when she died.
Birth Notes: Ann, daughter of James & Mary Hudson, was registered as born 23 October 1801 , in Baptist (
nonconformist) , Eythorne, kent. OPR Batch #C091631.
Ann had 14 siblings ( unknown how many lived)
Research Notes: UK 1841 Census... Ann is a Widow ( has 6 children)
From Researcher Bruce Ewan: To find Ann's surname I looked at her children's names. Joseph and Mary were ones
uncommon in past "BEAN" families.
Ann's father or brother was probably named Joseph ( was a brother) "Mary" was her Mother & sister's names, next Ann,
had to be born around1801 & had to be "available to marry" when Sarah Marsh died .. Valentine at least needed a
housekeeper for his 4 or more children !!
Children of VALENTINE BEAN and ELIZABETH MAXTED are:
i. ANN4 BEAN, b. 1796, Eythorne, Kent UK.
Notes for ANN BEAN:
31st. July 1796 in Eythorne, kent. This is only a christening date -- IGI Individual Record: Batch No: C019667,

Notes for ABRAHAM BEAN:
Abraham also died as an infant, the mortality rate in those days was horrendous.
vi.VALENTINE BEAN, b. 2 April 1809, Eythorne, Kent UK; d. Abt. 1818.
Notes for VALENTINE BEAN:
The actual date of this Valentine's death is not recorded, there are several references to "Valentines" of which we still
have to ascertain which one belongs to which family, it appears that the name "Valentine" is consistent with this
particular branch but there are so many "twigs" we are not certain at this stage as to which "Valentine " belongs to
which
If this entry is correct this Valentine was only 9 years old when he died
Death Notes: free BMD Records have a "Valentine Bean" dying (age 67) in December 1905. Born abt. 1838 (
Adisham) Bridge; 2a; 535.
The dates of this Valentine do not fit in.
Another entry: has Valentine widowed and 80 yrs. old on the 1891 census.... didn't find him on the 1901 census,( this
seems more realistic so far as age goes) He would only have been 2 months old when his Mother died , so If he lived
, he would probably be sent to be wet nursed with Sarah Murton, wife of his Uncle , William Bean, Sarah had had a
child , John in March of 1810.
If this is our Valentine , he grew up , married & died in Adisham.

10. SAMUEL BEAN (VALENTINE , WILLIAM BEANE, WILLIAM ) was born 24 March 1799 in Eythorne, and died Bef.
1823 in Kent, England. He married ANN (UNKNOWN).
Notes for SAMUEL BEAN:
Samuel is down as a labourer in the Eythorne Composite register - roll No. 413(1694-1812) Item 10.
I question this entry as I have no proof at this stage but it seems very likely that this Samuel is the son of Valentine &
Elizabeth.
If he is Valentine & Elizabeths son, he would be 10-13 yrs. old. , a not uncommon age for kids to go out "to work"
Research notes from Bruce Ewan:
Have no records as to what happened to Samuel (age 10) , his sisters, Ann( age 14) & Elizabeth (age 6) and brother
Valentine ( 3 months) , when their Mother Elizabeth Maxted died, 27th. June 1810

Notes for WILLIAM BEAN:
The 1841 census - Parish of Eythorne ( Ancestry Library Edition) shows William aged 25yrs. & Charlotte aged 20yrs.
Again this appears to be incorrect as there was a greater age difference here ,but in those times age was not relavent and
a lot of people didn't really know how old they were!!
Also at this address were children: Eliza aged 2 yrs & Valentine 1 yr.
The 1871 census : Civil Parish- Eythorne: shows William , no age recorded , living in "Upper Street" and occupation
shows "Temporary absence" .
Charlotte aged 49yrs.-occupation: Agricultural Labourers wife.

England, daughter of THOMAS WATERS and ELIZABETH. She was born Abt. 1812 in Wye, Kent, and died March 1907 in
Eastry 2a; 802.
Notes for HENRY CHARLES BEAN:
The 1841 census; Parish of Eastry; shows Henry aged 25yrs. working as an Agricultural Labourer ,( I question Henry's
age here , but in those days many a person did not know exactly how old they were and took a guess but as you can see
in the 1851 census he has corrected that discrepency ) a John Webb aged 24yrs. working as an Agricultural Labourer
and Charlotte Waters & Harriett Dixon both aged 15 yrs. working as "F Labourers " ( Not sure what this means -- could
be Farm labourers )
The 1851census ; Parish Eastry; sees Henry aged 38 Yrs. ??? living at 128 Church Street, working as an Agricultural
Labourer, with his now wife Charlotte aged 28yrs. ??? , son William 8yrs. , daughter Sarah Ann ,3yrs. and son Thomas
7 mths.
The 1861 census ; Parish of Eastry; sees the family still living at 128 Church Street but only Sarah & Thomas at home it
would appear that William has sought work elswhere.
The 1871 census ; Parish of Eastry; Shows Henry and Charlotte 's address as "Farthingate" , no children at this address
The 1881 census; Parish of Eastry; sees Henry aged 67 yrs. & Charlotte aged 57yrs. now living in High Street, Henry 's

The Mary Bean who died 1845 may be this one ? we may never know !!

20. ELIZA BEAN (VALENTINE , WILLIAM BEANE, WILLIAM ) was born 1831 in Eyhorne ,Kent, England, and died
March 1889 in Eastry,( Greenwich; 1d; 648 ). She married EDWARD HOILE March 1853 in (Eastry; 2a; 829 ), son of
WILLIAM HOILE and MARY (UNKNOWN). He was born Abt. 1823 in Tillmanstone, and died June 1915 in Eastry, Kent ,
England.
Notes for ELIZA BEAN:
The 1881 census , Civil Parish : Tilmanstone: shows Eliza aged 48 yrs. Living at "Lower Street" with Husband Edward
Hoile aged 58 yrs.
working as an Agricultural labourer
Children are: Valentine aged 32yrs. ( It would appear that Valentine was born to Eliza out of wedlock and Edward
adopted him when he & Eliza married ) Thomas aged 22yrs.- Edwin aged 14yrs.- Henry Jarvis aged 11 yrs. &
Frederick aged 4 yrs.
It appears as if Eliza died before the 1891 census
The only death record that could be found for Elize is as follows:
Elizabeth Hoile; died March 1889; ( aged 62yrs.) ; Greenwich; 1d; 648
Greenwich was part of Kent that got shifted to London in the late 1880's
Eliza & Elizabeth are used interchangeably in the records . This Elizabeths age does NOT match with her age on several
censii... but that may not be the issue. People often did not know how old they were , & Children and spouses often
didn't know , so the problem was compounded.

21. VALENTINE BEAN (WILLIAM , VALENTINE , WILLIAM BEANE, WILLIAM ) was born 7 June 1840 in Eythorne, Kent,
England, and died 17 September 1912 in Eastlingdown, Waldershire, Kent, England. He married L UCY ANN ROBERTS
17 October 1864 in Temple Ewell ( Dover; 2a; 1505 ), daughter of J AMES ROBERTS and MATILDA ROOTS. She was
born March 1848 in Alkham, kent, England, and died 24 March 1930 in Holly Lodge, Whitfield, Kent.
Notes for VALENTINE BEAN:
Eythorne Parish Register: Eythorne Composite Register: Roll No. 413. 1813-1899 . Item 11: Baptisims : June 7- 1840 -Reg. No. 287.
Valentine -- son of William & Charlotte Bean of Eythorne. Occupation: Thatcher.
Valentine was 71 yrs. old when he died in 1912 at Eastlingdown Farm, Waldershire, Kent
From England & Wales Free BDM records : Valentine Bean, age 71 yrs. , Vol. 2a., Page 1057.
Valentine Bean rented a farm at Folkstone, Kent, England, there were 8 boys and 6 girls in Valentine and Lucy's family,
they were: John(Jack)my grandfather, married Ellen Amelia Mount went to N.S.W. Australia, Wally( We suspect his
name was Valentine & Wally a "nickname" ) information from Zena Jones : "Wally" joined an American circus that was
touring England about 1900's, he was some sort of engineer, there was no electricity in those days and Wally drove the
dynamo for the lights etc. , he ended up marrying the circus owners daughter and they had a family, mostly boys. Aunty
Lucy(my aunt, Ted's sister) wrote to his wife for years after her Mother ( Amelia) died. While on a trip many years ago
Ted& Marj Bean (my Mother & Father) were approached by a chap from America who noticed the name "Bean" on
their luggage, said he knew Wally well, went through the war with him , and that there were a lot of "Beans" in
America. (While doing this research I also find a huge number of "Beans" but have yet to connect any to "Wally" )
Has been suggested , the war hero in Canberra and the American Astronaut, Alan Bean, are descendants of Wally Bean,
but this has not been proven.
Wally went to America., George, Bill & Steve to Sheperton, Victoria Australia, had sheep and orchards. Roland,Ted
and Dave stayed in England, Louisa & Annie both went to Canada not sure if they married over there or married prior to
sailing , Hilda who came out to housekeep for George, Bill & Steve, met and married Maurice Kay in Melbourne.
During World War 2 a cousin from England wrote to Aunty Lucy(Fletcher) from Sydney, he was a commanding officer
in the airforce, his sister later wrote that his plane was shot down, then the sister and Grandfather's youngest brother,
Dave and his wife were killed in an air raid of Folkstone, near Kent, ( this has not been proven).
The 1871 Census - Civil Parish Lydden- District of Canterbury shows:
Valentine aged 32 yrs. occupation: Farm Bailiff
Lucy A aged 24yrs.
George V aged 6 yrs.
William C aged 4 yrs.
John V aged 1 yr.
The 1881 census : FHL Film 1341239 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1006 Folio 15 Page 23.-- ( Parish of Ewell ) shows:Valentine Bean, married, age 40, born, Eythorne, Kent , England, Agriculturer labourer

Information from Hilda Mace-daughter of Roland : Valentine and Lucy lived at Eastlingdown Farm Waldershire, N.C.
Dover, Kent, which was leased or rented from the Earl of Guildford, I used to live with them , when Lucy got too old
to run the farm she sold all the machinery etc. and moved to Holly Lodge Cottage, Eastlingdown Farm, and died there
as did her son David (he had no family). Ted died and left a son Edward who has since died .
Information from Doris Ingell, July 20, 2001,(Grand daughter of Lousia - Bean - Ferrell,) states family as:
Louisa, Ted, David, Roland, Valentine (came to Canada. Died in the States while on a visit ,had 5 children) ,Hilda (went

In the 1901 census for Kent - Waldershire Parish - District of Eastry - we find Valentine and family living at

Warren & I visited this farm while in Kent in 2005, the homestead looked exactly the same as it did in the photo we
have which could have been taken over 100 yrs. ago !!

Lucy Ann Roberts 20 sp. otp. Fthr. James Roberts, Labourer.
Witnesses George Roberts and Eliza Livett
(Lucy Ann signed her own name- most in those days, pre-compulsory education, of course, just put their mark)
According to the 1851 & 1861 census It would appear that Lucy's age at time of marriage was only 16yrs. and not 20
yrs as stated in her marriage notice , young girls often lied about their age in those days .

Information from Helen Pfann: William left a will in which he left legacies to his sister Hila McKay (Kay) his neice
Nita Bean, his brother Stephen, his nephew Ronald Bean and his adopted son John Bean. Apparently he was married
but there us no mention of a wife in his will. Described as an ex farmer, late of Shepparton . However he does not
appear on the Victorian Death Indexes. In the probate papers there is mention of expenses to be paid to Leeton Nursing
Home , so maybe he died in N.S.W.
From the transcript below it would appear that William did indeed marry but the name of the Mother is a mystry,
should be Lucy , perhaps someone took a guess !!

Before he became foreman on Sir John Heritages farm, Jack left school at the age of 12 and drove a large tractor engine
pulling thousands of bricks all over England to different places. The councils of each place had to tell him which
bridges he had to cross and which roads to take as the load was very heavy. At one stage he broke his leg and always
walked with a limp, for the rest of his life.
Jack Bean(John Valentine) was head foreman and vet on Sir John Heritages experimental farm in Kent and had a lot of
men working under him. Five of his children were born in Kent the other four in Australia. He married Ellen Amelia
Mount .
In 1910 Jack Bean and family went to live in Australia at Woodburn in northern N.S.W., the English government did not
want him to leave as he was a key man , so they wrote to an experimental farm in Hawksbury and also one at
Wollongbar and told them to give this man a managers position, but Jack Bean refused and went on a farm of his own,
Jack came to Australia six months ahead of his family to find some some where to live & work , he then travelled to
Sydney to meet the family, then went on to Woodburn, arriving by boat at the wharf in Woodburn at night. The small
town was all lit up and crowds of people were every where. The next day they were told that people came from miles
around and from other towns to see the first English Lady to land at Woodburn. Jack was a farmer at Woodburn, he was
a remarkable man, had a marvellous memory and cured many people of complaints that Drs. could'nt and also animals
that vets couldn't.
Sir John Heritages farm was bombed in the first world war (1914-1918), Jack Bean"s father's farm was cut up and at the
end of his farm starts the undersea tunnel to France.
On his son Edward's birth certificate it shows that John was a Milkman in 1905 living at Peene farm, Newington , with
his wife Ellen and family.
Some years later some of the men who worked on the farm in England came to Australia and lived near Jack Bean-- the
Wanstalls, Taylors, Gowers, Wrattens.
The boat they came to Australia on was called "Ophir" (I think this was the one that Dad(Ted) came out on with his
Mother and other siblings) John Bean ( grandfather) came to Australia six months before Grandmother and the first 5
children, born in England, not sure of the month they arrived in Australia, we know they came via the Suez Canal, most
likely an Orient Line.
Granfather first settled on Os Gollans farm at Woodburn-- from there to Codrington then The Point Coraki, six
monthsafter arriving in Woodburn , he went to Sydney to meet Grandmother & the children & brought them to
Woodburn. Think the name of the ship that grandfather came out on was the "Orsover".(not sure)

When Ellen Amelia died , Jack & the rest of the family carried on , on the farm at The Point, Coraki. Grace was
working at the Hospital until she married, Lucy & Arthur were married & left, . Then a fire destroyed the home &
contents, a new house was built on the farm. The farm became infested with ticks & was quarantined. The family left
The Point and moved to McKees Hill.
Jack did have a drink problem , but only when he met up with his old cronies in town once a week when they were on
the farm at The Point. he couldn't hold more than a couple of glasses.
The creamy pony knew the way home.So long as some one in town got him into the sulky or on the horses back,he got
home OK & they rolled him out after he got home & left him to sober up. Later in life he didn't bother with drink at all,
he just had his pipe.

Eulogy for Marjorie Florence Bean ( Andrews) Read by Grand daughter Narelle Besseling at Marj's Service.
Marjorie Florence Bean, born Marjorie Florence Andrews on the 11th. June 1908 ,in a Pub at Wyrallah, the second child
to Earnest Charles and Matilda Jane Andrews .
Marjorie spent all her school years attending Wyrallah Public School , she met her late husband "Ted" Bean at a local
dance and after a fairly long courtship they were married in St. Pauls Presbyterian Church, Keen Street Lismore in
August 1940, they settled at Teven , renting a dairy farm for several years, they then moved to Wyrallah to work the
home farm where Marjorie was reared.
When the home farm was sold Ted & Marj. Moved up the road to farm for Mr. Les Moss and later purchased that
property and lived there until poor health forced them to sell in 1968 and retire to Wollongbar where they resided until
Ted's death in 1986.
Marj continued to live at Wollongbar until ill health forced her to take up residence in Maranoa Hostel in Alstonville on
12th. July 1990, where she resided happily for 11yrs, here she took a great interest in handicrafts and was well known
for her gift with crochet and knitting, many a pattern was thought up by Marj and we have several dozen cushion covers
to prove it and some very odd shaped garments, at 92 years of age Marj knitted a jumper for her Great Grandson
Mitchell - 1 big sleeve and 1 small sleeve- I will be forever grateful to my daughter-in-law Yvette for putting that
jumper on Mitchell and taking his photo for his "Early Years" album, not many children today can boast a jumper
knitted without a pattern by their Great Grandmother of 92yrs.
Marj was very fond of gardening and couldn't help but dig up a patch outside her bedroom window at the Hostel, much
to the horror of the staff, here she planted all sorts of cuttings to give to us to "get a bit of colour around the place",
some of that garden still remains today.
Marj maintained this piece of garden until she was unable to stay at the Hostel and took up residence in Maranoa
Nursing Home at Dibbs Street Lismore on 23rd. October 2001, here she resided until her death.
Marj was affectionately known as "Beanie" by all the staff and was always trying to "put one over" Mike the activities
officer, and gave the staff a few laughs from time to time, she loved playing Bingo and card games, she loved bus trips
and shopping trips and reading and enjoyed the visits from her surviving sisters and the game of cards that followed.
The arrival of her sister Stella at the Nursing Home was a great joy to Marj , but sadly Stella's death in 2003 weighed
heavily with her and she never really got over it.
In 2007 Marj was joined at Maranoa Lismore by another sister Edna , unfortunately Edna passed away only 2 weeks
after arriving .
In January 2005 Marj had a fall on her way back to her room and broke her right hip, this really took a toll on her but
true to her strong form she made a remarkable recovery but was unable to walk on her own .Then in April that same
year (2005) she decided to try to get out of bed in the early hours and fell again this time breaking the left hip and
hitting her head with massive bruising, but again true to form she was back at the home after 4 days in hospital and
another recovery was well on the way.
Marj had great determination and strength of will , she had to be watched constantly for fear of what she may attempt
next and on one occasion had managed to scoot her chair with the brake on out into the garden and was found sitting
among the camellias !! this was a talking point with the staff for a few days.
Marj also suffered from dementia over the last 4 years and although it is a terrible illness it has it's lighter side, Marj
never complained as she was in her own little world, time meant nothing to her , visitors came and went , she was happy
to see them even though she didn't have a clue as to who they were and always thanked them for coming and said how
good it was to see them.
On June 11th. 2007 we celebrated Marj's 99th. Birthday with morning tea at Maranoa Nursing Home , Marj enjoyed
the company of all present , 2 of her sisters, Alma & Myra, her daughter Delma & her husband Warren , grand
daughters Narelle & her husband Dick, Lynette & 4 of her 12 G. Grandchildren, Melinda, Cameron, Elliott,& Fraser.
Marj managed to cut the cake on her own & loved the pink icing and flower decorations.
Marj is survived by her 3 children: Delma, Merlene & Kelvin, sons in law Warren & Graham, 2 sisters Alma & Myra ,
7 Grandchildren Narelle, Beverley, Lynette , Louise , Colin , Ken & Jeffery and 12 Great Grandchildren, Christopher,
Melinda & Denise, Aimee, Madison & Olivia , Cameron, Elliott & Fraser, Emily & Mitchell, & Jacob.
We give thanks for the life of our Mother Marjorie Florence Bean, and we thank the staff of Maranoa Alstonville and
Lismore for the care and dedication shown to Marj over the past 18 years, your love and care to our Mother will never
be forgotten, you are special people.

Notes for SHIRLEY GAVA:
After her Mother died Eric found it impossible to care for Shirley and she was taken in by Lucy Fletcher for
apprximately a year when Lucy found a family in Newcastle who were willing to foster Shirley , after a time this family
wished to adopt her and on enquiring ofEric found that he was not the legal guardian but Santos Gava was, with this
information the welfare swooped in and Shirley was re-united with the Gava family of whom she had no recolection,
this made life extremely difficult for Shirley for a time.

A Tribute to Mom-- Read by daughter Joanne.
On behalf of our family, I'd like to thank you all for coming today to join us in this celebration of our mother's life.
82 years ago, on April 21st, two baby girls were born. One was born in England, raised in privileged circumstances and
became the Queen of England. The other was raised on a small farm in Saskatchewan and is my mother. Her name is
Doris and she is matriarch of a family that includes four daughter, three sons in law and eight grandchildren. She is the
Queen of our family.
Mom grew up on a small farm in southeast Saskatchewan. Born into modest circumstances, she grew up through the
depression and the "dirty thirties". Life on a prairie farm at that time was labour intensive and times were tough. Her
only sibling, a brother, died at less than a year. Mom worked hard helping her father in the fields , driving teams of
horses, baling hay. There was no electricity and no running water. Water was hauled from a well in the field and rain
water was collected for all purposes. Life was hard but with a loving, extended family, the farm always held a special
place in her heart.
Mom was a very good student and would have liked to attend university, but financial considerations did not permit She
went to business college, worked for Hydro and married a dashing University of Saskatchewan Agriculture student, also
from a farming background. They started a family in Regina and like the majority of women in the 50's and 60's, mom
stayed home, raising the children. Our dad travelled a lot when we were young, so a lot of the time she was on her own
with 4 kids. With no siblings for support or no parents or in-laws close by, she often dealt with numerous illnesses and
crises by herself. Once she found herself locked out of her house in the middle of a Winnipeg winter by her 2 year old,
Mary Lou, who proceeded to smear the windows and cupboards with lard. This was only one of many childhood
challenges she dealt with and we're all responsible for many of the grey hairs she acquired (not that anyone ever saw
them!)
Mom was a women of many talents. When we were growing up, she sewed most of our clothes, from flannel
nightgowns to Paula's wedding dress. Once the grandchildren started arriving, she produced christening gowns,
Halloween outfits and Christmas dresses for them as well. Mom's baking talents are well documented. Throughout our
childhood, we always had homemade cookies in our house....we really had no idea that some people actually bought
cookies at the store. Mom also made the best pies around, only rivalled by those of her best friend, Evelyn Huycke.
Mom has always been very creative and a good sport. We made several cross country trips back to Saskatchewan, with
all 4 of us loaded in the back of the station wagon. We all remember the loot bags each day with special treats like paper
dolls, colouring books and comics to brighten our days and help pass the hours in the car. We camped along the way and
mom did all the cooking over a Coleman stove. We all remember her stirring spaghetti sauce on the camp stove in the
rain while we huddled in "no frills" tent trailer, watching the raindrops drip off her nose into the pot!
Mom was very loving and nurturing. Her family and friends meant everything to her and she was supportive to all of us
in so many ways. She remembered and celebrated every special event....birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and more.
She always had Valentine's day and Easter treats not only for her grandchildren, but for us as well...she even made sure
to have a cookie in her pocket for her grand-dog. Care packages were always on the bus for all four of us when we spent
our summers at camp. The packages continued to the same camp as her grandchildren started to , and continue to work
at camp Wankita. There was always room for extra guests at our dinner table, we always knew we could bring home a
friend. She and dad frequently babysat grandchildren, including times when my sisters travelled for pleasure and
business.
The church that we are sitting in has been a big part of our mom's life for 44 years. Throughout the years, she taught
Sunday school, was a member of the UCW Morning Glories, headed up many fundraising initiatives, was president of
Appleby Friends and designed and made many of the church banners which are still in use today.
Mom was a trooper and her sense of humour helped her keep an optimistic outlook on life. It was one of the qualities
which attracted Dad to her in the first place. Her favourite saying this past few years was that she was happy to be "on
this side of the sod ". We can't repeat some of her other sayings! As you all know, she's had various health challenges
throughout the years. Still, at age 82 she counted her blessings, remained stoic and rarely complained. She has survived
breast cancer and 8 hip operations, and in this past few years, got around on crutches with the help of Dad. Amazingly
she stayed active with Probus and Book clubs and bi-weekly bridge and dinner group. We all know where we inherited
our active social lives.
Throughout the years, mom and dad travelled extensively and many of you here were wonderful travelling companions.
Her troubles with her mobility this past few years, restricted her travel activities
Mom enriched the lives of all of her family with her thoughtfulness, kind gestures, quiet support and practical help.
Everyone's Mother holds a place of honour in his or her heart. The past few days have given us an opportunity to reflect
on what she meant to us ! Thank you for being here to share these memories with us.
