Joan Rees, Chair Friends of Glebe Housing Cover: Festive Greetings 1 PAST EVENTS THE BENCURTIS WALKING GROUP Past Walks: Wednesday 30th October – On a lovely bright and sunny day Don & Pam led 14 walkers on a walk from Hampton Court. After lunch in the Tiltyard Restaurant, the walk continued along the Thames towpath to Kingston bridge. Then on to John Lewis for refreshments in the Riverside Restaurant before returning home by train. Wednesday 13th November – Mystery walk led by Jean R. We took the 119 bus to Sandilands tram stop and from there a tram to The Arena. Then past “The Tollgate” and soon alongside Long Wood and into Ashburton Playing Fields. After previous heavy rain, the field was rather muddy, but the rest of the way was along tarmac paths. Passing the old fire station (now closed) we crossed Addiscombe Road to circle round Ashburton Park and on to Woodside tram stop. Then tram to George Street Croydon where we had an enjoyable lunch in The George (Wetherspoon) pub, after which we returned home. Wednesday 27th November – Pat & Ernie’s walk to Mordon Hall Park will be reported in the next News and Views. Future Walks: Wednesday 18th December – To be led by Don & Pam. The postponed walk from St. Pancras (1½ miles) to view the station and see the John Betjeman and The Meeting Statues. Then coffee before going on to old St. Pancras Church. Connections with Thomas Hardy of Wessex fame and tomb stones placed on edge to make room for St. Pancras Station. Lunch before returning home. See notice boards Willis and Sarjeant Courts for travel details. See next “News & Views” for possible dates for next year’s walks, depending on weather conditions! Happy Christmas. Jean Richards AUTUMN FAYRE Saturday 16th November We made an approximate total of £2,176.00 when going to press. On behalf of the Friends I would like to thank everyone for their help and support in making this year’s Fayre such a success, especially Margaret Davies and Josephine Williams who supported the Fayre for months before, collecting and sorting all the wonderful donations of goods that were given during the preceding months, also their tremendous help on the two days before and being the mainstays in clearing up on Saturday. Thank you also to everybody for donating wonderful goods for Bric-a-Brac the best we have received, the super raffle prizes both hamper and bottle raffle and also all the handmade goods, homemade cakes, never forgetting everybody who comes, both residents relatives and friends with open purses. The Friends will put some of the proceeds towards the new minibus and probably hold some in reserve until the new conservatory and kitchen area in the Notley Lounge are completed. Thanks must go to the resident who suggested the gift bag stall. We took an extra 100% more than was expected. With Christmas and birthdays during the year we shall be grateful for more bags and small gifts to fill them next year. I have already taken the opportunity of a small local sale of toiletry goods also the soft toy gifts were very popular can we start collecting these as well. If someone contacts you on your telephone and they say they are from your bank or credit card provider THEY PROBABLY ARE NOT as banks do not generally contact customers on their home telephone number – PUT THE PHONE DOWN. 2. Do not get into any kind of conversation, they are tricksters and will try to worry you and get information about your card numbers, pin numbers etc – PUT THE PHONE DOWN. NEVER DISCLOSE YOUR CARD NUMBER OR PIN NUMBER OR GIVE THEM TO ANYONE. THEY SEND BOGUS COURIERS TO YOUR HOME. 3. If they give you a telephone number to call them back DO NOT CALL BACK – IT IS A TRICK – PUT THE PHONE DOWN. 4. If you are concerned after a call, contact your bank or go to your branch, they will happily help and advise you. GLEBE COURT NEWS SATURDAY 21st DECEMBER 10.30am-2pm CAKE SALE AVERY FABRICS WEST WICKHAM Please support their cake sale as all proceeds are being donated to support The Glebe Court Residents Support Group Glebe Court Nursing Home Enquiries Tel no. 020 8462 6609 Fax no. 020 8462 9971 Email: glebecourt@hotmail.com VOLUNTEERING ONLY: activities@glebecourtnursinghome.co.uk Well, our Fireworks Party did go off with a bang! Low level fireworks were a real picture for the residents to enjoy from the warmth of the conservatory. We had pretty ‘LED’ candles inside and real ones outside to set the scene. Derek, Jim and Les were really busy outside setting off the wonderful colourful firework spectacular and, of course, Handel’s Firework Music Suite accompanied them. Residents held glow sticks and it was a great atmosphere. Then, fantastic food was served up by Susie and Wendy. Ann and Ann provided refreshments of wine and orange juice and the party 9 continued past bed time and fun was had by all. Thank you to Mary and her team from the Glebe Court Residents Support Group for a lovely evening. We have enjoyed a selection of entertainers this month from regulars like Jim on the piano and Jamie Steen with his shows ‘Bless ‘em All’ and costume changes celebrating the 1940’s with the hits from the blitz. Newcomers, Almond Greenway, provided a lively show with backing videos and the Showtime Singers, whose simplicity touched the tapping hands and feet of our residents who had a great sing along with them and Chris Clark on vocals and trumpet which residents enjoyed although some commented it was a bit too loud!! On Turkish Independence Day we enjoyed a special menu of Besamel Musakka and Balkan Guveci followed by Seftalili Tart which some residents loved to try. The room was decorated with red and white Turkish flags and images. Arts and Crafts have continued to be popular with a session painting pumpkin suncatchers which look lovely hanging in the window of the conservatory. We’ve made fruit plates using stickers and we’ve had fun making objects from soft air drying clay in all colours including snakes, snowmen, dogs, hats, cups, flowers, people etc… Our manicurist, Marisa, is back and residents are really pleased to have beautiful painted nails again in time for Christmas. Eileen, our lively sing along volunteer held a small music appreciation group which was much enjoyed by those who went. Our exciting new project this month has been the start of a six week music therapy pilot. Kwaku, a wonderfully talented, friendly and engaging therapist is working with three residents on a one to one basis and doing a group session in the upstairs lounge with handheld instruments accompanying his keyboard. Our residents are making music loud and lively and having great fun. It’s amazing to see how he works and improvises to go with the flow and the smiles and appreciation from the residents is truly remarkable. We have lots of entertainment booked for Christmas and we are now on a roll for the festive period. Joanna Brick, Activities Co-ordinator All contributions for next month’s News & Views need to be in by Monday 22nd December 2013 – please pass to the Administration Office We wish all our residents, staff, volunteers, families and visitors the very best for the festive season and New Year 10
