Formulas Review Sheet Name_________________ VOCABULARY Perimeter and Circumference refer to the distance around a shape and are measured in units. Area refers to the amount of space inside a 2-D object and is measured in units squared. Surface Area is the amount of space on the outside of a 3-D figure (its covering) and is measured in units squared. Volume is the amount that a 3-D figure can contain and is measured in units cubed. In the Volume and Surface Area formulas, B stands for the area of the base. In the Volume and Surface Area formulas, p stands for the perimeter of the base and l stands for the slant height. Perimeter and Area: Find the perimeter or area of the shape. Copy the formula, substitute carefully, and solve correctly. Don’t forget to label your answer! 1) Find the circumference of a circle with a diameter of 9 inches. 2) You have a large tree in your front yard. At noon, the tree casts a circular shadow with a radius of 9 m. You are now planting a tree in your back yard. At noon, its shadow will have a radius of 4 m. How much of your yard is shaded by the two trees at noon? Volume and Surface Area: Find the volume or surface area of the shape. Copy the formula, substitute carefully, and solve correctly. Don’t forget to label your answer! 3) Find the volume of the cylinder. 4) 6 cm Find the Surface Area of the cylinder. 8 cm 5) Find the Volume of the pyramid. 6) Find the Surface Area of the pyramid. 9) You have a box that is 21 cm long, 6 cm wide and 8 cm tall. You also have a can that has a diameter of 19 cm and a height of 20 cm. Which container holds more and how do you know? 7) Find the Surface Area of the Cone 8) What is the surface area of the triangular prism pictured here? 10) Your little cousin got a new sandbox for her birthday. It is in the shape of a cylinder with a diameter of 3.5 ft and a depth of 0.8 ft. You bought her 6 bags of sand containing 2 cu ft each. You want to fill the sandbox and make it even on the top. Do you have enough sand? If yes, how much extra do you have? If no, how much more do you need?
