Cultural Arts For cultural activities, Lee County can’t be beat with its wide variety of offerings including museums, art galleries and stage and musical performances. Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art—Regarded as one of the most renowned museums in the Southeast, the Museum features a permanent collection that includes the works of Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keefe and Marc Chagall. Traveling exhibits are featured throughout the year and the museum’s 15-acre botanical garden offers both walking trails and a scenic lake. Museum of East Alabama—Located in the center of Opelika’s renovated downtown district, the museum houses numerous artifacts and exhibits that illuminate Lee County’s history. Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center—The home for community theatre and cultural programs also features a gallery dedicated to the works of regional artists. Rattling Gourd Gallery—Housed in a restored 1907 Victorian home the gallery features the works of local and regional folk artists with some items available for purchase. Telfair Peet Theatre—Located on Auburn University’s campus, the theatre features plays and other stage performances ranging from classical to modern productions.
