Graduate Software Engineer
The Company
Smartology has developed unique technology that allows digital content to be
semantically profiled and matched against relevant content and user interests in
dynamic creatives and widgets. Smartology’s content marketing software can be
applied to all digital data sets including editorial, research and advertising, across both
web and mobile. We are working on cutting edge client projects with publishers and
brands including The Financial Times, The Independent, IBM, The Royal Bank of
Scotland and others.

We are located in SE1 between Waterloo and London Bridge main line stations.
The Role
This is a technical role that requires a good appreciation of web technologies and this
person will demonstrate the flair, flexibility, experience and confidence to work under
their own initiative and as part of an Agile team developing applications across an
application stack comprising Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS and Linux.
We are committed to the development of our staff with an emphasis of supported “on the
job” learning, supplemented by additional training as identified. This candidate will be
expected to demonstrate continual growth in their technology platform.
You will be working on real projects from day one and work assignments will include
both product development and client projects, where you will be expected to meet
deadlines whilst observing our development practices and engineering standards.
You will be part of a dynamic early stage venture as we move into the next phase of our
growth and have the opportunity to be a part of the next green field evolution of the
product.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Working with the sales team and clients to deliver integrated contextual content and
marketing solutions based on the Smartology’s semantic technology

Ensure client projects are delivered on time, escalating issues quickly and clearly

As part of the engineering team, contribute to translating technology and product
strategy into project deliverables

Active participation and contribution to our Agile process

Proactive learning

Ensure solutions are robust and technically fit for purpose and are designed with
consideration for support and management in a production environment

Active participation in knowledge and skills transfer, to remove key person
dependencies

Test driven development

Adherence to our software development standards and practices, ensuring work is
developed to accepted good engineering standards

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications / Competencies / Skills / Experience
Essential

University degree educated in the field of Computer Science/Engineering/Information
Systems

Evidence of practical development experience in one or more of the following
technologies: JavaScript, PHP, Objective C, SQL, MySQL, HTML5, XHTML, CSS
and Linux or Unix

Delivery focussed and commitment to achieving deadlines

Problem analysis and resolution

Solution focused

Able to work alone and use own initiative, engaging with others when needed

Self starter with the tenacity to get tasks done - on time and to accepted quality
standards

Excellent organisation and time management skills
Interpersonal Skills

Ability to build effective working relationships with technical peers

Ability to build effective working relationships with a wide range of semi and nontechnical customers

Good general written and verbal business communication skills

Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and clients
