Name: ___________________________ Date: _________________ Period: ____________ Learning how to Weave-and Beyond To weave effectively, use your TLQ (Transition, Lead-in, Quote) knowledge and expand on that. Decide what the 12-15 most important consecutive words in your quote are, and weave the rest of your quote with the context you set up in your lead-in. Weaving: Antigone In the Prologue, when Antigone is trying to convince Ismene that she should help bury their brother, Antigone expresses her frustration when she declares, “If that is what you think, I should not want you, even if you asked to come” (Sophocles 941). 1. Below is a quote from Antigone supporting the idea that Creon’s rule is that of a dictatorship. Underneath the quote, determine who is saying the quote, what the person saying it is referring to, when he/she says it, where he/she says it, why he/she says it and how he/she says it (tone of voice). Quote: “Show me the man who keeps his house in hand, He’s fit for public authority. I’ll have no dealings with law-breakers, critics of the government: Whoever is chosen to govern should be obeyed—must be obeyed, in all things, great and small, just and unjust!” (Sophocles 792) Who: Creon (antagonist) to Haimon What: His authority, his idea of government and how he rules Thebes. Describing that a man who can run/control his household is fit for authority. When: After he finds out that Antigone has buried Polyneices, After Haimon confronts Creon regarding Antigone’s punishment; in scene 3 Where: in palace; Thebes Why: because he is upset that his law has been broken; trying to prove to Haimon why he needs to be harsh and punish Antigone for her crime; How: threatening, forceful, confident, aggressive, angry, stern, Now choose about 3 of the 5 Ws/H to “weave” into a “lead-in,” which could also include a “lead-out” (ending the sentence with some information after the quote). You may also want to paraphrase part of the quote to expand on your weaving because you need to shorten the quote to 12 -15 words. Try it. __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ 2.
