9th Grade Physical Education Course Description This activity class deals with the strategy and format to be used in team and individual oriented activities. More individual time will be spent to help develop and polish motor skills as well as to begin to develop a lifetime fitness plan. Lifetime activities will be introduced to provide programs that increase physical fitness and worthy use of leisure time. Also develop knowledge of rules and teach respect, cooperation, and promote sportsmanship as a participant and spectator. To provide an environment whereby each student can find avenues for success not attainable in other classroom settings. To provide the student with an opportunity to develop small and large motor activities, flexibility, balance, endurance, strength and coordination, and self-awareness. Main objective is to promote enjoyment for continual physical activity outside of the school environment. Course Standards Standard 1: Uses a variety of basic and advanced movement forms Uses advanced sport-specific skills in selected physical activities. (NPE.BAM 2) Standard 2: Uses movements concepts and principles in the development of motor skills Understands the physiological principles governing fitness maintenance and improvement. (NPE.MS 3) Uses offensive and defensive strategies and appropriate rules for sports and other physical activities. (NPE.MS 4) Standard 3: Understands the benefits and costs associated with participation in physical activity. Understands the potentially dangerous consequences and outcomes of participation in physical activities. (NPE.BCPA 3) Standard 4: Understands how to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness Knows personal status of muscular strength and endurance of the arms, abdomen, back and legs. (NPE.PF 2) Knows personal status of body composition. (NPE.PF 4) Understands how to maintain an active lifestyle throughout life. (NPE.PF 7) Standard 5: Understands the social and personal responsibility associated with participation in physical activity Understands how participation in physical activity fosters awareness of diversity. (NPE.SPPA 3) Understands the concept of “sportsmanship” and the importance of responsible behavior while participating in physical activities. (NPE.SPPA 7) Major Projects/ Assignments Students will engage in group fitness competitions weekly. Students will plan and run a tournament with group members.
