Organizational Resume
Mission
The mission of the American Association for Health Education (AAHE) is to advance the profession by
serving health educators and other professionals who strive to promote the health of all people through
education and other systematic strategies. AAHE serves health education professionals in medical care,
community/public health, business, schools, and higher education.
Affiliations
AAHE assumes leadership positions in health education related coalitions and organizations to advance the
research and practice of health education and promotion, including:
 American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance
 National Coordinating Committee on School Health
 Coalition of National Health Education Organizations
 Friends of School Health
 National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education
 National Commission for Health Education Credentialing
 Alliance for Curriculum Reform
Periodicals and Publications
AAHE produces four periodicals. The two journals are peer-reviewed. They include:
 American Journal of Health Education, circulation 8,000
 International Electronic Journal of Health Education, open volume, Internet-based
 HIV & Comprehensive School Health Education Project Brief, circulation 700 colleges and
universities
 HE-Xtra Newsletter, circulation 6500 members
AAHE has provided leadership in the development of health education professional standards as well as a
number of national programs. Examples include:
 Responsibilities and Competencies for Teachers of Young Adolescents
 Health Instruction Responsibilities and Competencies for Elementary Classroom Teachers
 Standards for the Pre-service Education of Teachers in Health Education
 Joint Committee on Terminology for Health Education and Promotion
 Professional Preparation of Special Education Teachers in Health Education
 Preparation of student teachers for School Health
 Administered the National Adolescent Student Health Survey, the first national study of adolescent
attitudes and behavior related to critical health issues;
 Coordinated conferences, underwritten by Metropolitan Life Foundation, to help educators share
components for successful school health education programs;
 Served as the lead organization in the development of National Health Education Standards, K-12
 Developed publications and professional preparation workshops on cultural awareness and sensitivity
through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education;
 Designed and implemented programs on HIV prevention, drug abuse prevention, sun safety/skin cancer
protection, and seat belt safety education with assistance from the BEST Foundation for a Drug Free
Tomorrow, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
