Speech‐language pathologists (SLP) play a critical role in the assessment of children suspected of having an ASD. The range of ASDs encompasses the full continuum from nonverbal with severe cognitive and communication challenges to high functioning autism. This leaves the SLP with many challenges when it comes to conducting a valid and legally defensible assessment. This training will address communication assessment across the spectrum. Case studies, including relevant video examples across a range of ages and the spectrum, will be incorporated. Audience: Speech‐language pathologists (SLP) and SLP assistants Presenter: Lisa Moncayo, M.A., CCC‐SLP, is a speech‐language pathologist at the Diagnostic Center, Southern California. She has an M.A. in Communicative Disorders from CSU Long Beach and has completed advanced coursework in severe disabilities and autism spectrum disorders through Western Carolina University. Lisa holds California state licensure in speech‐language pathology and the Certificate of Clinical Certification from the American Speech‐Language‐Hearing Association (ASHA). She has extensive experience working with children with special needs in nonpublic and public school settings. Lisa has served on numerous CSHA and ASHA committees, including ASHA’s Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology, and more recently the Multicultural Issues Board. Areas of expertise include autism, severe disabilities, and issues in culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Outcomes: Participants will: Discuss research and diagnostic criteria that differentiates autism from other disorders. Select the appropriate diagnostic tools that include standardized and non-standardized measures for children across the spectrum. Explain how to set up and structure assessments for students who present with challenging behaviors. To register: Registration deadline is March 7, 2013.
