The department

Elderly Psychiatry
Generic skills in history taking, physical
examination, documentation, arrangement and
follow up of investigation. Diagnosis of common
primary health type diagnoses, infection,
hypertension, chest pain etc, involvement in
management of long term conditions, diabetes,
stroke disease etc. Safe prescribing under
supervision. Prioritisation of workload and time
management,
communication
with
other
specialties and MDT working.
Specialty specific skills in mental state
examination, cognitive assessment, assessment
of common mental health conditions, delirium,
dementia, mood disorder, risk assessment
including of self harm.
Patient safety, infection control, nutrition and
sensory impairment.
Ethical and legal issues including MHA, MCA,
DoLS.
Working with families, carers and community
teams. Audit completion and its place in clinical
governance.
Supported to attend FY training, local psychiatry
training,
including
journal
club,
case
presentation. Weekly protected supervision time,
clinical supervision from ST4/5, CT1-3 and
consultants. Development of communication
through observed practice, supervision and MDT
contribution. Patients with wide range of
communication needs.
Information gathering and communication with
carers, other professionals and in formal written
summaries and letters. Member of full MDT,
interaction with community team, primary care,
local acute trust. Part of teaching program for all
University of Manchester 4th year medical
student ‘mind and movement’ module, under
supervision and with quality assurance with
feedback from seniors and students.
Opportunities to contribute to training of other
non medical staff. Limited to primary care
aspects and BLS.
GMC regulations prevent full prescribing rights
in non acute hospital non residential setting. See
Maintaining good medical practice.
Access to both foundation program training and
post grad department and that of school of
psychiatry.
IT access on unit.
Where the placement is based
Ribbleton Hospital
Clinical Supervisor(s) for the Dr J Knapp + pending recruitment of another
placement
consultant.
Main duties of the placement
One of 2 FY1’s with support from 3 SHO/Core
trainees, 1 Speciality trainee and 2 consultants.
Under supervision provides day to day care for
about 50% of the inpatients. Includes physical
assessment,
mental
health
assessment,
clerking, presentation at MDT, arranging and
following
up
physical
investigations,
correspondence with primary care and referral to
other services.
Typical working pattern in this Typically a short MDT handover meeting each
placement
morning, participation in more detailed clinical
review and care planning meetings 2 or 3 times
per week.
Opportunities available to experience clinic and
community work and to sample other psychiatry
specialites, but no responsibilities in these
areas. 9-5 Mon to Fri. No OOHs. Can time shift
to experience general adult on call by
shadowing SHO if relevant for their training
experience.
