Description
This workshop introduces participants to early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) and
discrete trial teaching. Included in this workshop are reviews of the literature on EIBI,
factors associated with improved outcomes, and strategies for maximizing a child’s gains.
Participants will learn how to conduct DTT through instruction and review of video.
Principles of behavior analysis including reinforcement, prompting and prompt fading, and
differential reinforcement will be covered. Participants will learn strategies based on our
own research and training program to train others to perform discrete trials, monitor their
performance and train them to be trainers for new implementers. Strategies for setting up
and maintaining an effective EIBI program will be discussed.
This workshop provides an overview of behavioral techniques and the associated research
used to teach language and provide instruction throughout the day. Techniques covered
include verbal behavior (VB), Natural Environment Training (NET), Incidental Teaching,
Pivotal Response Training (PRT), and Peer and Video Modeling. Similarities and
differences among the various techniques as well as when each should be used will be
discussed.
This workshop is designed to teach participants how to design an individualized
curriculum for young children with autism. The curriculum is based on applied behavior
analysis and scientific research supporting its use as a comprehensive treatment for
children with autism. Participants will learn to assess a child’s current skill level through
the use of a structured assessment tool and then use that information to develop an
individualized curriculum across a variety of skill domains. The presenter will also discuss
effective strategies for setting up and maintaining a child’s curriculum.
This workshop reviews the research behind functional behavioral assessments (FBA),
describes the 3 levels of FBAs, and how to conduct them. Participants are provided with
the necessary forms and instruction to be able to conduct their own FBA. Participants are
then taught how to use the FBA results to develop a positive behavior support plan.
This workshop covers research proven techniques used to decrease maladaptive behaviors
and increase pro-social replacement behaviors. Some of the strategies include:
reinforcement techniques, antecedent manipulations, extinction, differential reinforcement,
punishment, planned ignoring, manual guidance, time out and shaping. Participants will
learn several protocols from our own clinical work that address the most common behavior
problems in children with autism including: dropping to the floor, non-compliance,
insistence on same and obsessive compulsive behaviors, dealing with hair cuts and other
health care/medical procedures, increasing the variety of foods eaten, and staying on-task.
This workshop describes how to prepare and maximize the likelihood of successful
transition to school for a child with autism. Topics covered include: when to consider
transition, prerequisite skills necessary for academic success, strategies for classroom
inclusion including visual schedules, peer tutoring and shadows, and how to fade supports
for lasting success.
This 3 hour workshop provides and overview of the diagnostic criteria for individuals with
Asperger’s and associated behavioral difficulties. Strategies for helping individuals with
Asperger’s cope and function more independently are reviewed. The workshop includes
review of relevant research and video examples.
