THE IWK HEALTH CENTRE RESEARCH ASSOCIATESHIP PROGRAM PURPOSE: The primary goal of this program is to assist in the development and maintenance of outstanding interdisciplinary research programs/groups. To encourage all aspects of research related to the health of women, children and newborns including basic laboratory and clinical research in education and rehabilitation. To enhance collaborative research within the IWK Health Centre. Category A - Emerging Research Groups: To enhance research potential through developing and fostering of research activities that facilitate research teamwork. Category B - Established Research Groups: To enhance research productivity of established multi-disciplinary research groups through developing and writing of grants that advance and sustain research activities. The Research Associate will develop his/her skills and enhance the research productivity of other researchers in the group. Both full and part-time positions may be awarded under this program. The application will be judged on the merits of both the applicant and of the research group that the Associate will join. Applications that cross disciplines are encouraged. ELIGIBILITY: 1. Emerging Research Groups: The Research Associate must have a Masters degree. 2. Established Research groups: The Research Associate must have a PhD or equivalent. 3. The candidate must have completed two or more years of research training. 4. The candidate must be a Canadian citizen or have landed immigrant status. 5. The CAT B applicant must be recommended by way of a signature on this application by a University Department Head. 6. The group must show clear evidence of research commitment. 7. The group must provide adequate research space and facilities. 8. The group must demonstrate the need for an individual of this calibre and indicate the plans for future development of the research associate’s skills. 9. The awards are tenable under the direct supervision of employees or active members of the staff of the IWK and those holding an IWK MDSS designation Health Centre who meet the following minimum requirements: a) Significant research presence at the IWK b) Primary research occurring and funds held at the IWK. Applicants who do not meet all of these criteria are asked to explain their affiliation with the IWK on page 3. APPLICATION: Depending on the availability of funds, the Associateship competition will be offered twice a year. Deadlines: June 15 & November 25 Part 1 B Candidate: 1. The candidate must provide curriculum vitae. 2. The candidate must ask three references to send confidential letters of reference to the Chief of Research, IWK Health Centre. The letters should be marked Research Associate Application Reference letter. At least one reference should be the applicant’s most recent direct supervisor. 3. The candidate must complete all sections of the Associateship application form. Part 1 B Supervisor The coordinator of the group (or supervisor of the Associate) must indicate which category (A) or (B) is requested and complete sections 14 to 16 of the Associateship application. The coordinator must provide their own curriculum vitae and an abbreviated CV of the other members of the group. For Category A (Emerging Research Group) within the application, the co-ordinator must demonstrate the extent and nature of ongoing commitment to research of the group and the long-term goals of the group. The coordinator must indicate and justify the proposed salary and commitment to contribute at least 25%. For Category B (Established Research Group) within the application, the supervisor must demonstrate how the Research Associate will enhance interaction in the multi-disciplinary group, and how this will create new opportunities or greater productivity for research. The supervisor must indicate and justify the proposed salary and commitment to contribute at least 25%. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 1. The award is for three years. The award is not renewable. However, upon completing a three-year term, the applicant may reapply. Such resubmission will compete with all other applicants. 2. The number of awards will be no more than two Research Associateships will be awarded in one year and no more than three FTE Research Associateships will be supported at any one time. The IWK’s financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should our funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, the IWK reserves the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to grants received as a result of this funding opportunity 3. The IWK Research Associate award will provide a contribution of 75% of the salary* to a maximum of $45,000. The sponsoring research group is responsible for all benefits or insurance fees. The sponsoring group or department will provide 25% or more of the Research Associate salary*. The salary and subsequent incremental steps will be determined and set at professional levels for licensed clinical professionals or at the CIHR rate for salary support of Post Doctoral Fellow. For part-time staff, the amount of the award will be prorated to the percentage of time committed to research. 4. Associateships are taxed as income by Revenue Canada. 5. A full-time Research Associate is expected to devote at least 80% of their time to research. They may engage in teaching or other activity related to their research with the agreement of the Supervisor and Chief of Research for the remaining 20% of their time. 6. The award may be terminated at any time for just cause by the Research Associate, the supervisor or the IWK Health Centre. 2 D:\533569782.doc RESPONSIBILITY OF SUPERVISOR AND ASSOCIATE: 1. Publication acknowledgment: Research Associates are expected to publish their research and assist others to prepare for publication in the course of their Associateship. Publications should acknowledge the author as the holder of a Research Associateship at the IWK Health Centre. Awards and prizes should also acknowledge the support of the IWK Health Centre, e.g. Dr. --- was the holder of a Research Associateship at the IWK Health Centre during part or all this research. 2. Disclosure: Recipients must follow all regulations of the Health Centre and must disclose any patentable or marketable discovery made during the time of the award to the Vice President, Operations and Support Services Division of the institution before any patent or marketing applications are made. 3. Regulations: The Associateship holder must register at the Centre with Protection Services and must follow all rules and regulations of Dalhousie University and the policies of the IWK Health Centre and its Research Services. 4. Annual Report: Each year the Associate will meet with the Chief of Research and their supervisor to summarize the past year’s activities, projects, publications, knowledge translation and interdisciplinary collaborators that have been established. The accomplishments of the previous year’s goals will be reviewed and goals for the next year set. The IWK Scientific Review Committee will review the application. The review process should be completed in 3 months or less.
