Changing Services Health services across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are undergoing a radical transformation to meet the changing needs of the population. In 2015, the New South Glasgow Hospital will open at the Southern General site. This is a flagship Scottish Government project and will see the amalgamation of services from the Victoria Infirmary, Southern General Hospital, and Western Infirmary. It is anticipated that the new hospital will have a 20 bedded Intensive Care Unit. In addition, the new Glasgow Paediatric Hospital will be collocated on site and this facility will work closely with the recently opened Maternity hospital. These plans will ensure that the New Southern General Hospital will be not only the largest hospital campus in Glasgow but one of the most modern and cutting edge locations for medical care in Scotland in the years ahead. 4 Hospitals where services are to be provided A single Theatres and Anaesthetics Service manages the clinical service throughout Glasgow. In addition to anaesthesia itself, the Service is responsible for the management of the operating theatres, intensive care and high dependency care, day surgery and acute and chronic pain services. Southern General Hospital The Southern General Hospital is a large teaching hospital with an acute operational bed compliment of approximately 900 beds. The hospital is situated in the South-West of Glasgow and provides a comprehensive range of acute and related clinical services. Services include Accident and Emergency, ENT, General Surgery, Obstetrics (delivery numbers approx 6000 births per annum), Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Neonatal Paediatrics, General Medicine,(including sub-specialties), Dermatology, Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitation and Day Services), Physically Disabled Rehabilitation and Continuing Care. Support services include a six bedded Intensive Care Unit for both medical and surgical patients plus a 6 bedded surgical High Dependency Unit. The Victoria Infirmary The Victoria Infirmary is a teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately 350 beds. The hospital is situated in the southeast of Glasgow providing a range of high quality health care services including Accident and Emergency, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitation and Day Services), and a wide range of Outpatient clinics. There is a busy six bedded Intensive Care Unit for both medical and surgical patients plus a surgical High Dependency Unit. New Victoria (Ambulatory Care) Hospital. The New Victoria Hospital opened in June 2009 and has an eight theatre suite with a generous supporting recovery area. The services using the theatre facilities include general surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, gynaecology, urology, ENT, oral surgery and chronic pain services. The theatre sessions are composed of patients having mainly minor operative procedures but surgical complexity is increasing as the facility develops. In addition there will be a 12 bedded 23 hour stay unit which is open during the week. The pain service provides out-patient clinics and day surgery treatments supported by the multi-disciplinary team of Physiotherapists, Clinical Psychologists and Clinical Nurse Specialists. Pain management in Glasgow also has an Intrathecal Drug Delivery Service at the Beatson Oncology unit, a Pain Management Programme based at the Anvil Centre in the East End and a Spinal Cord Stimulator Service. The Institute of Neurological Sciences ENT services are covered at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, based on the Southern General site. The Institute is equipped with 2 Magnetic Resonance Imaging suites, SPECT scanner, 2 Computerised Axial Tomography Scanners and angiography facilities. The Institute also provides Neurosurgical and Oral Maxillofacial Services. Western Infirmary The Western Infirmary, which is on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow's West End, has 493 beds and houses most of the acute emergency and receiving functions serving the west of the city - accident and emergency, intensive care, orthopaedic trauma, emergency surgery, acute medicine and acute stroke. In addition, the hospital also provides elective gastrointestinal, breast and renal surgery. Medical specialities include cardiology (coronary care, invasive and non-invasive cardiac investigation, and angioplasty), general medicine, nephrology (including renal transplantation) and dermatology. Support services include an 8 bedded Intensive Care/ High Dependency Unit for both medical and surgical patients. Gartnavel General Hospital Situated on Great Western Road, in the west of the city, the 465-bed Gartnavel General operates in close partnership with the Western Infirmary. A broad range of medical and surgical sub-specialities are provided, supported by an 10-theatre in-patient operating department. A Surgical Admissions Unit has recently been built next to the Main Theatre suite. As the base for many of West Glasgow's ambulatory care facilities, Gartnavel also has a purposebuilt day surgery unit. This has 4 theatres and supporting accommodation includes an eight-bed recovery area, a 12 bedded second stage recovery area and a six-bay reception/patient preparation area. In addition there is an endoscopy suite, imaging department (including CT and interventional radiology) and the main concentration of out-patient accommodation. The breadth and complexity of services at Gartnavel has expanded considerably over the past few years, with the development of the Brownlee Centre for communicable diseases, the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital, and the Beatson Oncology Centre. The Beatson has linear accelerator radiotherapy units and associated treatment planning facilities. 3. The post The postholder will have sessions at the Victoria Infirmary, New Victoria Hospital, Gartnavel General Hospital and Western Infirmary. The post will be 10 session post. A split of 9:1 between direct clinical care PAs and supporting professional activities is now the advertised standard for all new consultant job plans in Scotland. The one SPA minimum will reflect activity such as appraisal, personal audit and professional development occurring outside study leave time. Once the candidate has been appointed more SPA time may be agreed for activities such as undergraduate and postgraduate medical training which takes place outside direct clinical care, as well as research and/or management. These activities must be specifically and clearly identified and be agreed with the candidate and desired by the department. On call will be based predominantly at the Victoria Infirmary but may be based at the Southern General Hospital subject to service needs, and will be on a predictable hybrid rota mixing 1st and 2nd on call roles. As with established Consultants in Glasgow, job plan negotiation will take place once appointed, under the Terms and Conditions of the New Consultant Contract. The newly appointed Consultants may be offered EPA activity. There are established agreements across NHSGG & Clyde concerning the flexibility of SPAs within the new contract, which would be applied to any new appointment.
