Alfred Reed Much of Cichy’s music has been recorded by premiere ensembles such as the North Texas Wind Symphony conducted by Eugene Corporan, the University of Georgia Wind Symphony conducted by John Culvahouse, Rutgers Wind Ensemble conducted by William Berz, Luther College Concert Band conducted by Frederick Nyline, the University of St. Thomas Wind Ensemble conducted by Matthew George, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville conducted by John Bell, the United States Air Force Concert Band conducted by Col. Dennis M. Layendecker, and the United States Air Force Academy Band conducted by Lt. Col. Steven Grimo. Mr. Cichy’s newest compositions include Geometric Dances, commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association for the 2005 Indiana All-State High School Honor Band, Maestro!, commissioned by Indiana University for the retirement celebration of Director of Bands Ray Cramer, For Purple Mountain Majesties and Windsicle, both commissioned by the United State Air Force Academy Band, and Pandemonium, commissioned by the Western/Northwestern Divisions of CBDNA. This summer, Mr. Cichy will be the commissioned composer of Premiering Sydney, a world premier band festival with the premier of his work occurring in the renowned Sydney Opera House in Australia. Mr. Cichy has been featured along with ten other prominent composers in the 3 rd Volume of A Composer’s Insight (Meredith Music). This reference book is designed to focus on each composer’s approach to music, its inspiration, creation and performance. Roger Cichy (b. 1956) has a diverse background as both a composer/arranger and a music educator. Roger holds a Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Music Education degree from The Ohio State University. Although both degrees are in the area of music education, he has studied composition and arranging as a second area of concentration in both degree programs. As a music educator, Roger was a band director in Mars, Pennsylvania covering grades 5 through 12 in instrumental music. After earning his Masters degree and serving as a Graduate Assistant of The Ohio State University Marching Band, Roger served as associate director of band at the University of Rhode Island and Iowa State University where he directed the Marching Band, Concert Band, Basketball Pep Band and taught music courses on the undergraduate level. In 1995, he resigned his position at Iowa State University to devote full time to composing and arranging. As a freelance composer and arranger, Roger writes for high school, university and professional bands, professional orchestras, and the commercial music industry. He has over 300 compositions and arrangements to his name. Included in those are publications by Kendor Music, Psyclone Music, Heritage Music, Great Works Publishing, Band Music Press, Daehn Publications, Wingert-Jones Music, MSB Publishing, C. Alan Publications, Ludwig Music Publishing, Permus Publications, and Kalmus Music. His composition teachers include Edward Montgomery, Marshall Barnes and Joseph Levey. Roger has received numerous composition awards from The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) for serious music. His works range from small ensembles literature to compositions and arrangements for marching band, concert band, and symphonic orchestra. He is widely sought as a composer for commissions and frequently appears as a composer-in-residence and guest conductor. The music of Roger Cichy is continually being performed throughout the United State and abroad including Japan, England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, Russia and Mexico. His works have also been performed at many prestigious conventions including the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinics, CBDNA National and Regional Conventions, ASBDA Conventions, MENC National and Regional Conventions, several All-State Festivals and appear on many contest lists throughout the country.
