BCIL and IFGTB transfers an affordable technology on isolation of Nucleic acid developed by
The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Coimbatore
Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL) and The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree
Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore has transferred a rapid, low cost, high recovery
technology for the Isolation of nucleic acids from plant tissues. The nucleic acid isolation
kit developed by IFGTB has been licensed on 10th July, 2014 to Rapid Genomix
Solutions, Coimbatore on a non exclusive basis. The technology has been specifically
designed and validated for difficult tissues like needles, roots, wood, dry leaves from
tree and crop species and is best suited for dicots. The highlight of the technology is the
ease in handling the protocol, less time consuming and cost effectiveness.
The technology is based on the joint patent filed by IFGTB and Department of
Biotechnology, Government of India and the inventors of the technology are Dr.
Modhumita Dasgupta and Dr. Radha Veluthakkal of IFGTB.
The licensing of the technology has been facilitated by Biotech Consortium India
Limited (BCIL), a company promoted by Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of
Science and Technology, Government of India based at New Delhi. BCIL with its vast
experience and expertise in the area of biotechnology is playing an important role in
taking forward the technologies from lab to market and facilitating commercialization
of biotechnology.
The kit based on the technology is expected to be commercialized within a period of 9
months.
