The unit is functional round the clock every day. Hemodialysis is provided to the following categories of patients: Patients admitted in any department of the hospital needing dialysis during their inhospital stay Maintenance hemodialysis for patients registered in the living donor transplant programme as per waiting list Patients with Acute / Acute on chronic kidney disease for stabilization. Kidney Transplantation: The Department of Nephrology is one of the leading transplant centres in the country. Besides living related renal transplantation, it has done pioneering work in cadaveric renal and simultaneous pancreatic kidney transplantation. Three transplants are done every week. Transplantation activity is as per the Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1993, directives by the Hon. Supreme Court of India and guidelines as laid down by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare from time to time. The procedure for renal transplantation includes the following steps: The patient is registered in the Renal Clinic Renal replacement therapy counseling is given by the transplant co-ordinator The patient is evaluated thoroughly for fitness to undergo transplantation Assessment of donor (if available) Registration in the living related donor waiting list Acceptance in the maintenance hemodialysis programme of the dialysis unit as per seniority in the living related transplant waiting list Performance of renal transplant as per the waiting list & fitness of patient If no suitable living donor is available the patient is registered in the cadaver waiting list and called for transplant when cadaver kidney is available.(Currently maintenance hemodialysis facility is not provided to these patients) PATIENT EDUCATION The department is committed to increasing the awareness of the general public regarding various kidney diseases including their causes, prevention and available treatment modalities. Towards this end the department periodically conducts the following: Public Education Programmes Public Lectures Talks on Radio and TV Articles in the print medium School Health Education Programmes MEDICAL EDUCATION The department is active in teaching of: Undergraduates Postgraduates in General Medicine Post-doctoral fellows in nephrology for D.M.
