Freda Carey has been instrumental in providing successful Christian education for tribal groups in Pakistan. Since 1971, the Pakistan Committee for Theological Education by Extension has provided Christian Education materials for adults through a series of Biblical and theological courses combining selfstudy workbooks with weekly evening classes for group discussion and practical application of what has been learnt. Prayer Focus: Christians in Pakistan Only about 3% of Pakistan's population are Christians and they are mostly poor and socioeconomically disadvantaged. Most Pakistani Christians are Punjabis, descendants of Hindu 'lowcaste' groups, who became Christians during amazing mass movements between 1880 and 1930. 10am There will be refreshments in the hall after the 10am service today All Welcome Worship with Holy Communion DIARY FOR THE WEEK Tuesday 19th August 10.00am Holy Communion 2.30pm Holy Communion (MU) at Mountbatten Nursing Home Sunday 24th August 8.00am Traditional quiet Communion service 10.00am Worship with Communion 4.00pm Evening Worship at St George’s Home READINGS: Acts 5.vv12-16; Luke 22. vv24-30 Collections will be for: The Disasters Emergency appeal for Gaza. The 14 leading UK charities working in Gaza are helping to provide shelter items, hygiene kits and baby care supplies, but the needs are simply overwhelming. The immediate need for clean drinking water is urgent, as is the work which they are beginning to rehabilitate vital water infrastructure. Rebuilding of schools and counselling services for traumatised children are also being scaled up as children are amongst the worst affected. Prayer Focus: Those who work at sea on fishing boats, merchant ships, cruise ships, Royal Navy, etc. There's a very wide range of people working at sea e.g. cruise ships will have entertainers, chefs, stewards, chaplains etc NEW NOTICES DEPRESSION IN THE NEWS NHS research shows that approximately 15% of people suffer a bout of severe depression at some point in their lives. This figure is likely to be even higher as many people who suffer from depression do not get help, or are not formally diagnosed with the condition. Despite this, depression rarely makes headlines but this week has been an exception; the media has been full of the sad news of the death of Robin Williams who, it appears, committed suicide while depressed, reminding us that depression can be fatal. We don't have any comic geniuses or film stars at St George's but we do have people who are depressed. (Faith doesn't prevent you from becoming ill.) Please pray for them. SAD NEWS I have heard that former members of St George's, Ian McKee and Libby Webber, were on holiday in Madeira when Ian tragically died on Tuesday. Please pray for Libby and Ian's two daughters. ANNIE'S RIDE On Thursday 7th August Annie Suddaby and her horse, Gypsy, visited St George's as part of her journey of 150 miles round 50 Somerset churches in 24 days. She is raising money to recast and rehang the bells at St Mary Magdalene's here in Taunton. (It will cost £300,000.) When Annie arrived at our church she found a friend she had not seen for 45 years waiting to greet her. While her horse was tethered to a tree in the churchyard, Annie joined our ringers doing their stuff in our ringing chamber before moving on to the next of the remaining 38 churches. If you want to track Annie's progress or make a donation, the website is www.appealforabell.com RIDE AND STRIDE AS ANNOUNCED PREVIOUSLY Somerset Churches Trust is a charitable, non-denominational, environmental trust which make grants to Christian churches and chapels in Somerset to help meet the costs of repair and works to widen community use. Ride and Stride, is the Trust’s most important fund raising event. Participants on cycles, on foot, on horseback or in vehicles get themselves sponsored to visit as many churches and chapels as they think they are able to achieve. This year it will be on Saturday 13th September. St George's is on one of the R & S routes this year. We need volunteers to take a turn in providing refreshments throughout the day. If you are able to spare an hour, could you please add your name to the sign up sheet in the church porch. R & S in addition to the previous announcement. If you would like to actually ride or stride yourself, could you please contact Peter Joyce, leave a message at the Church Office or visit www.somersetchurchestrust.org WENDY This Sunday will be the last one at St George's for Wendy Jones. She is moving to live closer to her children. Wendy's time with us has been characterised by her willingness to volunteer, her hard work and her thoroughness in the many tasks she has undertaken. We shall pray for her at the 10a.m. service and hope that she finds a church community where she will quickly feel at home. The flowers in church this morning have been provided by Wendy's children, Anna & Gareth. In addition, when most people would be fully occupied with all the demands of moving house, I gather that Wendy has made time to bake cake to go with our coffee after the service. I did say she wasn't afraid of hard work. Please bring any tools and garden sacks that you can, and don’t forget your gloves – there are lots of brambles! Many hands make light work! Please bring your own drinks, but cake will be provided! NEXT SESSION: SATURDAY 30 August 9.30 – 12.30 REPEAT NOTICES HAVE YOU BORROWED ONE? All the sermons at the 10 a.m. service on Sunday mornings are recorded on cassette tapes for the benefit of anyone who wants to hear a sermon again or perhaps was unable to get to church that day. The tapes are reused after a period of time. The stock of tapes is nonetheless reducing. It suggests that perhaps people who have borrowed tapes have forgotten to return them. If you are in that situation, could you please return them to the Church Office soon. St George’s Church, Wilton Charity Registration Number: 1134647
