PURPOSE
To educate donors who have been identified as a match for a blood cancer patient and organise all further
processes of the stem cell or bone marrow donation.
Background
Delete Blood Cancer UK belongs to a global network of organisations under the umbrella of the German
Foundation for Giving Life (DKMS Stiftung Leben Spenden). All DKMS organisations are actively committed
to the fight against blood cancer and other diseases of the hematopoietic and lymphatic system.
DMKS was founded in Germany more than 20 years ago out of the fate of a family with the objective to find
stem cell and bone marrow donors for patients with blood cancer. Since then DKMS has become the largest
bone marrow donor centre in the world and leads the fight against blood cancer by empowering people to
take action, give bone marrow and save lives. DKMS has registered more than 4.3 million active donors so
far and adds over 800,000 every year to our databases in Germany, the US, in Poland and in Spain. Over
the years DKMS has given more than 40,000 patients a second chance of life all over the world. To better
fulfil its mission DKMS started its activities in the UK at the beginning of 2013 and since then has already
recruited more than 55,000 potential stem cell donors in the UK.
Request Management Department
The request management is a key part of our work and consists of four stages (confirmatory typing, workup,
follow up and transport operations). It is also part of the unrelated bone marrow donor search and collection
process in compliance with all internal, national and international standards and regulations. The Request
Management team is responsible for the detailed liaison with donors who have been identified as a match for
a patient and evaluate their medical suitability and eligibility. Team members manage all processes from
blood testing through medical examination appointments to the donation itself. They guide and advise the
donor at all stages and coordinate the communication between all involved international and national parties.
After donation the team administers the donors’ medical follow up and handles the donor patient contact.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Contact donors identified as potential matches for patients in need of a bone marrow transplant to assess
donor interest and availability.
2. Facilitate high resolution and confirmatory testing through the coordination of blood draw appointments
nationwide and all aspects of the donor workup process including:
 Educating and consenting donors on blood testing and the marrow or peripheral blood stem cell
donation process using principles of informed consent.
 Evaluate donors for medical and non-medical factors affecting suitability and eligibility using
guidelines set by Delete Blood Cancer UK and the national regulations.
 Coordinate physical exams, lab work and additional medical appointments as needed.
 Coordinate marrow and peripheral blood stem cell donations.
3. Ad hoc activities including research, quality assurance, and process improvement projects.
4. Facilitate post-donation medical follow up with donors including:
 Administering and evaluating verbal health assessments at proscribed intervals following donation.
 Handling post donation adverse events.
 Coordinating post donation medical appointments as needed.
 Ensuring timely and accurate entry and submission of electronic donor medical and follow up
records.
 Providing assistance for problem form resolution and error correction processing.
5. Coordinate post-donation patient and donor contact.
6. Ensure compliance with all standards, policies, procedures, and documentation requirements set by
Delete Blood Cancer, registries, and regulatory authorities such as the Human Tissue Authority etc.
7. Occasional travel may be necessary.
Person Specification
Because the candidate will be working with potential donors on a daily basis, it is essential to have excellent
communication, active listening skills, and empathy in interacting with people who are making significant life
decisions. The ideal candidate must be highly organized and detail oriented. Accuracy in completing data
forms and case note documentation is essential.
1. Minimum bachelor’s degree required or relevant experience.
2. Minimum of two years’ work experience in a healthcare setting or any combination of education and
experience which would provide an equivalent background.
3. Knowledge of medical terminology, case-note documentation, and conducting medical histories is
preferred.
4. Willingness to become acquainted with a very specific discipline/branch of medical science.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
6. A high degree of sensitivity and empathy.
7. Very proactive work ethic and the ability to diligently meet targets.
8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
9. Must be detailed oriented, highly organized and able to multitask efficiently.
10. Flexible, entrepreneurial spirit.
11. Proficiency in Windows and/or Mac OS, Word, Outlook, Excel, and internet searches required.
Conditions of Employment
1. 37.5 hour week, Monday to Friday
2. Salary £ 30,000
3. 25 days’ holiday per annum (plus public holidays)
