2nd period
Four out of five people in the state of Tennessee believe that winning is not most
important. For example, Michael Jordan did not win every game he played. People in
general need to accept defeat in every aspect of life. Winning isn't everything. Sports
teams need to learn to accept defeat, to never give up, and to play for fun.
First off, winning isn't everything, because it is important to accept defeat. Especially in
life, there will be times when you will lose in situations. It is important to accept the loss
and move on. The main idea in competitive situation is to do your best and if you lose,
dust yourself off and try again. For example, Dale Earnhart did not win every single race,
but he kept on trying. Defeat could not hold him back and he was still a winner.
Secondly, a respectable player must learn to never give up. “Try try try again,” is what
my coach says. A great athlete never gives up. For example, after a three month slump,
Tiger Woods still placed in the tour. Enduring a loss teaches an athlete to keep trying
harder.
Lastly, playing is for fun and not just for winning. Playing recreational sports helps
people meet others, and get exercise to be healthy. It’s not just about how many wins or
losses you have. People should focus less on rewards and more about the fun of the game.
For instance, an individual has trained incredibly hard for the competition. The player
may still fail four out of five times.
In conclusion, winning is great and enjoyable but it's not everything. By excepting defeat
individuals learn self confidence. Self confidence teaches people to never give up. Never
giving up educates people not to be frightened to lose. Without fear of defeat everyone is
truly playing for fun. Even Michael Jordan lost occasionally; would he be considered a
loser.

Some of the best coaches in the sporting world believe “winning isn’t everything, it’s the
only thing.” But, this mentality is flawed. Winning isn’t all that matters or the only thing
that matters because losing builds character, people should play for the love and passion
of the game, and people compete against themselves to become better.
Willie Jones from “Friday” once said, “You win some, you lose some, but you live to
fight another day.” For example, Losing builds character because when you lose, you can
get even more motivated to win the next time and losing teaches you to never give up.
Also, it helps you learn from your mistakes. For example, if you fall off your bike in
motorcross, the fall will teach you how to do it right the next time.
Next, you should play a sport for other reasons than winning. If you love a sport, play for
the passion and enjoyment of it. For example, if you play football and win but hate
playing, there is no point. Play football because it makes you happy.
Finally, you could have a chance to compete for your personal best. Let’s say you were a
Nascar driver, and you complete a lap in 1:49 and you want to improve your lap time. Or,
say you’re playing football and you kick the ball 45 yards and you want to try for 5 more
now. If you complete those you can try to improve it later.
So winning isn’t everything and it’s not the only thing either. You play for the love the
passion of the game, losing builds character, and you compete for your own personal
best. Everyone strives to set goals and beat them, but first sometimes you have to lose.
Never give up on yourself. It’s ok to lose, it makes you stronger.
4th period
In the words of Ricky Bobby, “If you’re not first, you’re last.”
Winning is everything. One does not enter a competition to lose. Who
would ever pay money and spend hours practicing for a competition,
only to be defeated? We should all have goals in life, and we should
eventually expect nothing other than being the best. Winning is the
only option because no one wants to lose, it would be a waste of time
and money to not play to win, and winning is a goal to work towards.
First of all, nobody wants to lose. The whole point of trying
anything is to be successful. Playing a sport without winning is like
having a job without pay. One might gain experience, but there is no
tangible reward. What would be the point of working your hardest, just
to end up losing? For example, a boy works hard at his basketball
practice, but when the team plays for the first time he loses. When
someone loses it discourages them to try again.
In addition, the time and money put forth to partake in
activities would be wasted without an adequate result, such as
winning. For example, a friend trained for a marathon for two years at
two hours a day. On the day of the marathon, he could not complete
the race because of a cramp in his leg. All his preparation was futile. In
addition to time wasted, my friend also wasted money on expensive
running shoes and the cost of entering the marathon. A winner takes
advantage of every second of preparation given to him or her. Defeat
is not an option to one who uses his or her resources, such as time or
money, wisely.
Furthermore, winning is important because it gives a
competitor the aspirations to accomplish a task to the best of his or her
ability. Setting the goal to win gives an athlete self-reliance and the
purpose to do their best. For instance, the Patriots strive to become
better players with the goal in mind to win the Super Bowl. Without
having goals set, is there a potential of winning? Winning is
fabricating goals that all want to achieve.
In conclusion, winning is the key to success, so without success
there is no point. Winning is the only option because people do not
enjoy losing, playing to not win is a waste of time and money, and
winning is an important goal to work towards. With no benefits to
losing, imagine the better outcome and joy of winning.
Winning is the only thing
1. Winning is the only reason to play
2. Want to be successful/respected
Winning is not the only thing
1. Teaches humility/character
2. Play for the love of the game
3. Learn from your loss/mistakes
3. Gain fame/fortune
6th period
Remember last year when all your team did was lose? The only thing that
the team ever thought about was winning. A team has a picture of winning
all the time and never losing; that picture makes everyone feel great.
Winning is very important to a team because winning is the only reason to
play, the team wants to be successful/respected, and to gain fame/fortune
The great Charlie Sheen once said, “Winning.” The objective of any sport
is success. It’s part of human nature to be competitive. No one wants to
work hard to lose. In many cultures, losing brings great shame. In any
competition, success is the utmost accomplishment.
In addition to winning being the only reason to play a sport, the want to be
successful and gain respect as an athlete is another key factor. Imagine
being the scrawny little boy who everyone looks down upon. You have the
football at the end of the championship game with only seconds to go.
You run with all your might to the end zone while the fully occupied
crowds holding their breath to see what will happen. TOUCH DOWN!!!!
Within those few seconds, you have gone from being unimportant to a
hero. You become successful and respected. From now on when the
people in the stands recall that game, they see your play and you are
respected. Success and respect can only be achieved from winning, and
that is why winning is not only the only thing but everything.
Moreover, the final major component that makes winning the "only"
things is fame and fortune gained through playing the game. Every athlete
wants to be remembered, and make a difference in the game that they
play. The success of winning the game goes hand and hand with a
reputable salary. The public doesn’t remember a losing team. For
example, in 1999, the Tennessee Titans had the opportunity to shock the
world by winning the Super Bowl. However, the teams hopes were
crushed as wide receiver Kevin Dyson fell one yard short of the end zone
as time expired. The tragic ending to the team’s season is often overlooked
by the casual sports fan. In a nut shell fame and fortune lead to personal
happiness.
To reiterate, winning is everything. Most people that play a game are in it
to win it. Playing for all the right reasons usually leads to being successful
and respected. If a person is successful at a certain game, they can turn it
into a profession and gain fame and fortune. Everyone is given the
opportunity to win, it just depends if he or she takes the chance or not. As
Ricky Bobby once said “If you ain’t first, you’re last.”
Winning is not the only thing
1. Losing builds character
2. Play for love and passion for the game
3. Compete for your own personal best
Winning is not the only thing
1. Learn and grow from loss / learn sportsmanship
2. Opportunity to be part of a team / have fun
3. 3. Teaches humility / builds character
A well-known football coach once said, "Winning isn’t
everything, it’s the only thing." Do you agree or
disagree with this statement? Write an essay in which
you state your position and support it with convincing
reasons.
5th period
Michael Jordan is one of the best basketball players of all time. He won
hundreds of games, but Michael did lose a few games. Even the greatest of
all time loses. Winning isn’t the only thing that matters in a game. There
are many important lessons to learn from losing like learning good
sportsmanship, having the opportunity to be part of a team, and losing
builds great character.
The first reason why winning is not the only thing because losing gives
you the opportunity to learn from your loss and grow from it. Also, losing
teaches sportsmanship which is an honorable quality to have. If the athlete
is always winning then that quality eill never be learned. Losing helps you
grow, not only in your sport, but in life as well. A wise man once said, “ If
you learn from a loss, you have not lost.”
Along with the opportunity to be apart of something greater then yourself,
losing sometimes teaches us all humility. A great man once said,
“Humility and knowledge in poor clothes excels pride and ignorance in
costly attire”. What this is saying is that even though humility isn’t the
best feeling in the world, it is better to lose and learn from it than to win
and remain ignorant about it. Losing is sometimes necessary because we
all get a big head sometimes, and losing will cause it to deflate. Which
makes us realize that we aren’t as amazing as we think we are, and we all
need to realize that sometimes.
Furthermore, there is more to a sport than the sweet taste of victory. It
allows the collaboration of athletes to come together and create a family.
This produces a form of brotherhood, each one reliant on one another. For
example, April moved from Chicago to Washington and didn’t know a
single soul much less than where she was. She loved the thrill of playing
volleyball and she decided to go out for the team. After joining the team,
her horizons were expanded to different characters, attitudes and
personalities. She learned the values of dependability, friendship, patience,
accountability, and received support from her teammates. A wise man
once said, “Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of
me, I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”
In a nutshell, many sports teams believe winning isn't everything, it's the
only thing. Honestly, this is completely invalid. First, winning isn't a life
or death situation. By losing, a team not only leans the concept of
sportsmanship but also grows as a hole. After all, a famous person once
said, "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger." Second, playing a sport
is supposed to be enjoyable- having fun is more important then winning
24/7. Third and finally, accepting defeat builds character. Ghandi once
said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Winning is the only thing
1. Winning is a goal to work towards
2. Winning may gain you scholarships /fortune
3. Winning builds confidence
7th period
In the words of the great basketball star, Larry Bird, "If you win you look good, if you
look good you play good and if you play good you get respect from the competition."
Winning is a sensation that a team of athletes experiences when they have given their
blood, sweat and tears into a certain goal that the whole team has set. Vince Lombardi
said, "Winning isn't everything, its the only thing." These are true statements because,
losers don't get scholarships, winning builds confidence, and nobody would practices for
hours to lose. Some people are more calm with the idea of losing than others and at the
same time the mass majority of people hate losing and the feeling of defeat.
Winning is the only thing that matters. Winners get scholarships to colleges for their
athleticism and personal ingenuity. Winners get more benefits than losers. For example,
Tim Tebow is a winner because he aims for perfection. Tebow receives benefits in the
NFL all because he's a winner on and off the field as well. The road to winning is paved
with hard work, dedication and Frosted Flakes!
To add, winning enables a person to feel upbeat and as if they can overcome any
challenge that they run across. It's an exciting feeling that only comes when you get that
final reward from winning. Not only will you have confidence in the sport, but in all
aspects of life. People feel as if they can't be beat; that nothing can knock them down.
Likewise, who would practice to lose? Imagine in the middle of July running, weight
training, and practicing plays as an athlete for a great season. From a personal experience,
I've been through two-a-day practice and winter workouts. I've ran on hot pavement and
ran with ice on the track. A dedicated team does this to win and not to lose. Athletes
devote time and sweat into practice because they know that tough times don't last forever
but tough people do.
Winning is a feeling that all people love to have and relive. Scholarships, confidence and
a goal are three reasons why winning is everything. A well-know football coach once
said, "Winning isn't everything its the only thing.
